I'm Jessica, a 39-year-old freelance writer. I've been living with my partner (Omar, 35, Mexican) for eight years in Mexico City. We adopted a beautiful black lab mix puppy, Raava, in January 2023 who is as sweet and playful as can be. Now she’s 2 years old! Omar is a (music) artist and producer. We are an upbeat, active, creative, and artistic little family!

As I won't be around while you're here, I'll just talk about what Omar offers as a cultural gateway into the city.

Omar is a hip-hop artist signed with a major record label here in Mexico City. If you're interested in the urban music scene in Latin America, staying with us will be a door into the scene that would be hard to find as a normal traveler.

He's a native Spanish speaker (though he speaks fluent English too). Staying in our apartment would provide an opportunity to speak and improve your Spanish with a native. Also, as we live in a neighborhood outside of the traditional tourist areas, the nearby parks where you'll be walking Raava offer a plethora of opportunities to practice speaking Spanish with other dog owners. Before I leave town, I'll be introducing you to a couple of dog parks I frequent, where you’ll have lots of opportunities to practice speaking Spanish.

(when we are looking for someone I’ll post the dates here)

Because of the nature of Omar's schedule, when I'm out of town, he has trouble keeping up with all of Raava's needs. Basically, what we need is someone to help take care of her while I'm gone, things like taking her to the park to play and spending time with her on days when Omar goes to different studios.

Raava is a very active 65-pound dog. She's at a bit of a mischievous age, but overall she's a great listener. She's house-trained and very loving. We'd like a workawayer who loves and knows how to care for active and large dogs, loves walking, and is happy to wake up fairly early in the morning (8:00am) and take her for a couple of hours to the park. Raava needs about 3 hours a day outside, so it’s about an hour and a half in the morning and another hour and a half in the evening. Or 2 hours in the morning and 1 in the evening is ok too.

This is a gig for someone looking to trade an awesome place to stay in Mexico City in exchange for help taking care of Raava, who is just over a year old.

FYI: This is not a good situation for anyone looking to party here in the city or who wants to work elsewhere at the same time :/

    Accommodation

We live in an apartment in a quieter, residential, but still centrally-located area in Mexico City. The building has a 24-hour doorman, an elevator (we're on the 5th floor), and secure underground parking. It's a very safe and friendly neighborhood. Also, you won't find a lot of foreigners here. One of the most beautiful parks in the city (which remains unknown to most tourists) is only a 15-minute walk away.

In the apartment, you'll have your own bedroom (with a full-sized bed) and bathroom, as well as access to all the common areas. There's a fully-equipped kitchen, very fast wifi, a comfortable and bright place to work on a laptop, a big tv with lots of streaming channels, and a washer (no dryer-we hang dry). The apartment has big west-facing windows, so it gets lots of natural light. In the evenings, we get beautiful sunset views over the city and western mountains.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

You'll have plenty of free time to explore the city and do what you like, as you'll be helping to take care of Raava rather than doing it full-time. Omar will be here, so you’ll just arrange things day-to-day with him. He’s super easygoing and kind. Both the trendy, popular neighborhoods of Condesa and Coyoacan are only a 15-minute (traffic-willing) Uber away.

There's a big, commercial supermarket a 5-minute walk from the apartment, plus lots of smaller convenience stores, produce markets, and restaurants very close. The building is a 2-minute walk from a metro stop and a 15-minute walk from a metrobus stop.

As this is our personal space, you won't be allowed to have guests over.

Our condo building has rules against noise after 10pm, so this arrangement is definitely not ideal for someone loud or coming to the city to party. Also, smoking cigarettes is only allowed outside the front door of the building, not in the hallways (even though they are open air), and not inside the apartment or on our balcony. This is a strict rule that leads to a hefty fine by the building managers if broken. So, if you're a cigarette smoker, just keep in mind you'll have to leave the building to do so!
