    Description

Hello! We are a family of four living on Beautiful Bowen Island.
We are looking for workaways for two specific sets of timing, for different experiences and jobs:

January-March 2020: For one person or a couple to stay and live with and help our family. Cooking, cleaning, childcare, building and gardening projects.

More details about the help needed below. If you want to learn more about us, keep reading!

    Our location:
We're a family of four with two sweet dogs living on beautiful Bowen Island. Our home is nestled among old growth trees, essentially having us live right in the forest. This is an amazing spot for people who love to be in nature and active. We're minutes from the beach and some of the best hiking trails on island. We live right on a bus route that takes you into 'town' and to the ferry, which is only a short distance from the mainland and Vancouver. If you have a drivers licence, there is a car available. We also belong to a local private beach club that grants access to an outdoor swimming pool and gathering hub where we spend a lot of evenings visiting, having BBQs, and swimming in both the pool and ocean.

    Who we are/What we do:
We both work/study from home. We have an 12 year old son in grade 6 and an 14 month old son. They are both happy and pretty easy going guys. Andrew (husband/father) is currently on parental leave from his job as a parent support coach with the Canadian Mental Health Association, supporting parents with children with behavioural challenges. He is also in grad school getting his masters in psychology with a keen interest in neuroscience and depression. Chela (wife/mother) works as a developmental coach and consultant supporting leaders, entrepreneurs and teams in their personal and professional development. We both have office spaces in the home and trade off/share parenting.

    Where we're at:
We are looking for someone to stay for longer and help with our family and projects in January 2020. We think a couple could be really fun. We are a happy family with a lot on the go. We need day to day help with cooking, cleaning, some child care.

    Our values:
We are liberal and inclusive, non-religious but spiritually minded and open and embracing and curious. We value open communication and respect, healthy attachment and endeavor to raise our children with loving and conscious attention. Community and connection is important to us as well as living in a way that is as sustainable and causes as little harm to others and the planet as possible. Always a work in progress! We've both traveled and gained so much from those experiences. We know other families who have workaways staying with them and have had such great experiences. We know how much growth and compassion can come from travel and experiencing other cultures and we're excited to be host to those who are seeking this kind of experience and to receiving the support and learning that inviting you into our home would bring!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We live in a very special community on a small island. You'd have the opportunity to meet caring people and live and play in nature, to spend time outside and engage in healthy activity. Beyond our island are so many day trips and places that you can explore, both city and nature. Bowen Island is a quiet space, easily accessible to Vancouver, and ringed with mountain and beaches.

Our professions are in entrepreneurship, human development, coaching/psychology and so if those are topics of interest to you or your career, there's lots of potential to learn more about yourself, this industry and your own development.

  • Help

    Help

    January- March 2020

    Day to day home care:
We would love help with daily meals and light cleaning, some childcare of our baby (while we work from home) as well as walking or caring for the dogs if you like animals. We are most in need of help with consistency around food, so love of and skills with cooking is important. If you're someone who likes to have structure and direction, we are happy to have a clear schedule and offer direction around what we need. If you're someone who prefers a little more flow or has ideas about how to do things, We're happy to co-create what works.

We also have an area outside where we want to build new garden beds. Eventually we may want to build an area for chickens and we would like to raise bees. Someone who has skills and experience with garden, landscaping, building and eco farming practices would be wonderful to welcome into our home to lead some of these projects.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

    January - March
We have a suite in our basement that has its own bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and two other rooms that we use as a wreck/TV room and an office. So while not entirely your own apartment, it is a separate space where you can have privacy, your own bedroom, kitchen use if you want (or can just use the main kitchen), primary use of the washroom (sometimes used by others when down in the TV room) and access to the TV.

There are two more floors in the house. The main level has two living spaces, a spacious kitchen and dining area and laundry. Upper floor are our bedrooms and office.

We have a lush garden, large yard, lots of trees and even a treehouse you can sleep in if you're feeling adventurous. We live about a 15 minute drive from 'the Cove' where the shops, restaurants and ferry is. We live in a very quiet and magical spot.

We do want to do a small renovation to the basement, to reconfigure the rooms and we're looking for workaways in Jan-March for help with that. So the exact bedroom and location may shift, but we guarantee you a comfortable and private space.

    Food:
We're relatively easy with food. We buy organic wherever possible, and prefer to skew towards lower grains, more plant based. You'll have the run of the house and kitchen, and can feel free to cook/eat whatever you like. Just let us know special requests and we can add it to the grocery list. So far, we've been happy to accommodate various diets (vegan, gluten-free, dairy free) for our past workaways.

    What else ...

With your time off, there's a lot of trails and beaches to explore and you can easily travel into Vancouver and surrounding area to explore nature and city. We're happy to help you plan days and excursions based on what your specific interests are.

Transit is pretty easy from our house. We do have an on-island car available if you have a drivers licence.
