Have you ever wanted to visit San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas and get an authentic cultural experience? Then this is the organization for you! We are a new, up and coming organization that specializes in various activities across San Cristóbal de Las Casas. We are looking for positive, energetic, and outgoing volunteers to join us in helping low income families across the region. Our most popular program is our English teaching program, which aims to help locals practice their English speaking and writing skills. Although not a requirement, we do prefer native English speakers, as this presents the locals with a better opportunity to practice their conversational skills. Do you have other skills to share with the people? Our newest project aims to teach and expose the locals to many forms of art, such as music, visual arts, theatre, dancing, graffiti, etc. So if you’re a natural born creative, and have experience in the following areas, feel free to apply… all we need is a positive attitude and willingness to help in the projects described below.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
By joining us, you will have the opportunity to practice your Spanish. You will be able to learn about the Southern Indigenous Culture in Mexico. We will gladly teach you everything about our culture including our food, customs, history, dreams and expect to learn a lot from you as well.
If you are interested in teaching English, you are expected to stay between 4 to 5 months since our program follows the local school year calendar. The program is semester based, running from the last week of August to the second week of December and starting up again around the second week of January and ending the first week of July. Lessons take place in two different cities. We have lessons during the week in San Cristóbal de Las Casas and weekend lessons (usually Saturdays) in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, which is only 40 minutes away. We will show you how to travel between the two cities and cover all transportation expenses. However, we do ask that you complete at least 15 hours of volunteer work per week. We can accommodate a schedule prior to your arrival.
If you are interested in teaching both English and Art, you may do so accordingly, as long as you complete a 15-hour work week. Most lessons take place in San Cristóbal, but occasionally, we organize a few workshops in nearby rural and/or indigenous communities. This will give you a glimpse of the rich culture in Chiapas. This program also follows the school calendar: last week of August through the second week of December and second week of January through the first week of July.
