The foundation is primarily based in the most Northern city of Thailand: Mae Sai. The city is on the border with Myanmar (Burma). The foundation helps Burmese people in need, 80% is part of the Wa tribe, an ethnic group that lives mainly in northern Burma. Their children come to Thailand to enhance their opportunities or to escape their army duty. The foundation provides shelter and food, helps them with visa stuff and finding a school in Thailand. As a volunteer you will be working in the children home and at the day care, both in Mae Sai. Minimum stay is 2 weeks to benefit the children the most.
Also the foundation has 3 children homes in Myanmar which you will be able to visit during your stay if you like. Other services they provide are medical assistance for Burmese people in Thailand (translate at the hospital), they help improve villages in Myanmar (build schools and deliver medicine). They are very busy with all the people in need.
The children home in Mae Sai is situated in a baptist church and the family is religious but very open for everyone as long as you respect their views. Volunteering here is a truly great way to get to know both the Thai and Burmese culture and really help the foundation.

You will learn about Thai and Burmese culture, and try really delicious food! Teaching is a challenge but very rewarding, the children are super enthusiastic and well behaved. You will have to show a lot of initiative as there is no lesson plan but this will give you the opportunity to be creative.
The family is happy to take you on various trips during your stay. For example they can take you to Myanmar or Chiang Rai or to the Golden Triangle. It's really great to go to these places with locals because they can tell you so much about the history and current situation.
You will be working Monday to Friday. As a volunteer you're day will exist out of 2 hours of helping at the day care in the morning (3 year olds from families that can't afford child care). It's really easy fun work, lots of singing and playing and watching cartoons.
The afternoon you have for yourself to explore Mae Sai, rest and to prepare for the evening class. In the evening you will teach 2 hours of English at the children home. At the children home there are usually around 10 children but in holidays (when schools are closed and children come home) there are around 30, aged 3 to 25.
Also the foundation needs help with updating the website and facebook page. And they need assistance with fundraising ideas, if you have any experience in this field you will be very helpful!
The foundation is aware that Workawayers only help for 5 hours a day so if more help is required with admin tasks, you can skip the mornings at day care or something. They are very flexible and open for suggestions!
English, Thai, Wa, Chinese , Burmese
If you are a girl or a couple you can live in the family house. You will have your own room with balcony or you will share it with another volunteer. The family will provide food as well. They ask for a small contribution for your stay as the foundation has no funds or financial support. The family devotes all their time on the foundation and receives no pay.
There are many hotels and guesthouses in Mae Sai so you can choose to stay here also. In this case you are very welcome to join the family for dinners or lunches.

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
