    Description

9 years ago we bought a property and a piece of land in a beautiful location in the SW of Corfu. It is a big house split into 4 separate apartments and about an acre of undeveloped land. Our goal is to continue beautifying the house , to rent out rooms over the summer season and to continue to develop the garden into a beautiful productive space based on permaculture principles. All whilst cherishing every moment of the gorgeous surrounding land, lake and sea...

During the summer, we rent our rooms when we don't have family or friends staying, this is also our workaway accommodation. It's not a business, it is just to help offset some of our costs. Workaway volunteers are not involved in looking after paying guests. We have constructed an outside kitchen for everyone to use and some new garden beds are in development too. Workawayers with experience in carpentry, construction projects, painting and gardening as well as anyone with electrical knowledge are particularly welcome, due to the specific projects we are prioritising, but enthusiastic, 'give-it-a go and learn from experience' type individuals who don’t mind getting their hands dirty and get excited by the beauty of the natural world are also very welcome! Those who would enjoy cooking lunch and dinner would also be very welcome

OCTOBER 2026 - A decking platform needs constructing in the garden for exercise, and sunbathing next year. Lots of small jobs closing down the house and garden for the winter also need doing. There is likely to be a mix of fun work and boring work.... and there may also be the chance to help out one morning a week at a small local horse centre further along the lake - we often have one of the horses grazing in our garden, which provides effective lawnmowing at the same time as a wonderful supply of manure!. Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Corfu although the weather can be unpredictable, more days are sunny, and the sea is still warm!

This is a very rural part of Corfu, surrounded by small farms and olive groves, neighbouring a lovely taverna, 7 min walk from Halikounas beach, 15 min walk to the base of a small mountain/big hill and is next to Korission lagoon which is surrounded by a nature reserve with lots of walking paths through it. It is not quiet at certain times as the sounds of cockerels, dogs and farming activities can be heard at busy times but there are plenty of other times when it is very quiet. The closest village Agios Matthaios is a wonderful traditional place on the side of the mountain 6km away and really you're never too far from anything on an island! Stay here for the quiet nature and proximity to the beach - there are NO nightclubs, shopping malls, shops or public transport very near to us!

We are a British family with some Greek ancestry ( the name Pyrgos means 'tower' in Greek!), working on our dreams of one day being as much Greek as we are British! We work in England part of the year and spend as much time as we can in Corfu - it's a hard place to stay away from! We're laid back, respectful and friendly people and want the experience to be as much fun as it is hard work.

We are plant based eaters and whilst we enjoy sharing our meals with others, we also like to share the cooking regularly, and on some days will leave supplies for you to cook for yourselves. For accommodation we offer a room for 1 or 2 with private access, bathroom and balcony. It is a 7 minute walk to the lake and beach with any number of gorgeous walks also in the area. Whilst we are happy if we are going out to take you with us or drop you off at the nearest bus stop we are not a taxi service and you will require independence and a sense of adventure as well as self reliance when staying with us as we are off the beaten track and there is not much infrastructure around us.

We have greatly enjoyed our workaway hosting experiences to date and look forward to welcoming and getting know more fellow nature loving life explorers!

Corfu is an incredible island full of beautiful beaches, amazing food and incredibly friendly people. Life here is lived in the slow lane with a lot of time taken sat outside cafes and bars with a coffee or a beer chatting in the sunshine. There are so many different foods to try and its all sooo fresh, I've never had a tomato anywhere else that's tasted quite so good! There are a lot different seasonal festivals ranging from the ones specific to a town to whole island celebrations and visitors are always warmly received.

So the focus for the coming 12 months will be improving the garden beds along with some re-painting of outside woodwork, metalwork and railings. Woodworking experience is eagerly sought! Not least because I am keen to learn and improve my very beginner ability (Jane). Any creative design input is greatly appreciated! And then there is always lots of garden maintenance - cutting grass, and hedges, weeding planted areas, watering as well as planting and tending of the planted.
Skills are a bonus and if you let us know your expertise, we may be able plan a project around that but we are not particularly experienced with this sort of stuff either, we are learning so much as we find our way, so really enthusiasm and a willingness to contribute are the key things to bring with you!
Also we love people who like to cook as much as we do! We are vegetarian, and love to experience other peoples' favourite dishes from around the world. We expect that volunteers will take turns at cooking regularly. meat and fish eaters are very welcome as long as you are prepared to cook it yourself. .

You will share a studio for 2 people, with a single beds, a balcony, and bathroom, fridge and kettle - we may ask you to share with another volunteer - advance information guaranteed. The hot water comes from solar panels and there is plenty of it. You can eat with us (vegetarian) for most meals - usually DIY breakfast in your room, and one cooked meal a day with a midday DIY snack. We are literally 7 minutes walk from the beach which is a glorious long 2km stretch of sand. This is a very rural area, the nearest shops are several km away - 45 minutes walk to Agios Mattheos although its usually easy to hitch a lift.

    What else ...

Autumn 2026: My husband Mark will be at the property alone in early October and I will join him later in the month to help shut down the house for the winter.

There is lots to explore in the immediate locality if you like nature and to be outdoors. The beach is very popular for kite surfing and boards can be hired there (during the summer) and there are other lovely local beaches to discover, each very dfferent. There are ancient buildings and places to visit if you have a sense of adventure, willing to find your way using local buses - we are happy to drive you to the main road to access public transport if we are going out. Most people enjoy this area for the peaceful and beautiful nature - there are many lovely hiking opportunities. It is easy to rent a moped or car from nearby town Moraitika
Spring and Autumn are pre and post season tourism so not everything is open or running and volunteers should be prepared for that and for deep quiet. Out of season is our favourite time here as we have the beach to ourselves and everywhere is so quiet and peaceful!

Wifi signal is reliably strong in all parts of the building. Workaway visitors can share ensuite double rooms with a table and chairs on the balcony suitable for working at. We can be flexible about when jobs are done although it is usually practical to work morning or evening once the weather gets hot .

maybe... by discussion only please! We are definitely animal lovers and have had our own menagerie , so open to the possibility of well behaved and social dogs, cats and ? other accompanying equally well behaved and social workaway volunteers! We have our own cat with us who is a very big character - he has been used to living with our elderly dog but since Buster died he has greatly enjoyed being the 'boss'
