    Description

My mother and I share a dream — to bring back to life an old stone ruin in rural Slovenia. Just 20 minutes by car from the Italian border, this is a place where time seems to stand still, surrounded by rolling hills, fresh air, and a deep sense of tradition. I’m 26 years old and I study mathematical physics, and in my free time I love to disconnect from academic life and immerse myself in this peaceful, hands-on world.
Over the years, we have restored the inside of the house, transforming it into a welcoming space where young people gather to play music, sing, and enjoy barbecues together. The land around it is generous but vast, and for two women alone, it’s a challenge to keep up with it all. My mother, originally from Peru, moved to Italy at my age to study physics, then followed a completely different path. Over the course of her life she has learned to do just about anything — from sewing clothes to building furniture — and even carried out much of the renovation work herself, splitting stone and laying cement with her own hands.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Our home is a lively meeting place where different cultures blend naturally. We speak Spanish, Italian, and English on a daily basis, so there’s plenty of opportunity to practice or improve any of these languages. We often travel back and forth to Trieste — a beautiful city only 20 minutes away — and we’d be happy to show you around, share its history, and introduce you to typical Triestine dishes, as well as Peruvian specialties from my mother’s homeland.
Music is a big part of life here. Friends often gather to play together, and there’s a piano in the house for anyone who feels inspired. Whether you already play an instrument, want to learn, or simply enjoy being surrounded by music, you’ll find a welcoming and creative atmosphere.

Recently, we created new terraces on our property, and now we need a helping hand to bring them to life — planting young trees, cutting grass, designing the garden, and coming up with creative ways to make the place even more beautiful. One of our next projects is to build a vine-covered pergola together.

My mother is a woman of many talents. Throughout her life, she’s learned to do whatever was needed — from construction to carpentry — and even built all the furniture in our home. She’ll be a great guide and inspiration for anyone eager to learn and work with their hands.

We’re looking for volunteers who enjoy working outdoors, sharing ideas, and becoming part of a project that’s both rooted in tradition and full of creative possibilities.

We live in a quiet hillside area, perfect for cycling and exploring at a relaxed pace. From here, you can easily reach some of Slovenia’s most beautiful natural parks, with hiking trails, rivers, and stunning landscapes to discover. Just 20 minutes away is Trieste — one of the most beautiful cities in northern Italy, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It offers everything from beaches and seaside promenades to lively cafés, historic architecture, and vibrant nightlife.
