    Description

Hi there! We are looking for a couple (preferably) or an individual who has experience with construction/electrical/plumbing to come live on our gorgeous Colorado food forest! NOTE: We are looking for 1-2 long term people who have experience in these areas. Because of COVID we have to be pretty selective right now, so please only apply if you have this background. However, after COVID we would love to have more workawayers with various skillsets again! With the right person or couple, we hope you will stay through the winter, as we will be gone and we are hoping for someone to be a grounds keeper during the winter.

We have 36 acres we are turning from an abandoned farm into a food forest. Many of the buildings are run down so we are converting them into a hostel, communal room and kitchen, and tiny houses.

We are also planting trees and lots of different types of plants. We come and go from the food forest so we are looking for an individual or a couple who can work on projects and watch the chickens/ horse while we are gone, and help out while we’re there.

***Must have your own vehicle*** We are pretty rural, so there are no buses out here.

    We provide you:
    ⁃ Fresh veggies, as available
⁃ Fresh eggs every day starting in Fall (our chickens are still young)
    ⁃ Shared outdoor kitchen (summer)
⁃ Shared bathroom with shower and toilet (All year)
⁃ Private kitchen and bathroom with composting toilet (winter)
⁃ Campsite during the summer (recommended to have a camper, tiny home, or tent).
⁃ Private, heated indoor apartment during the winter (composting toilet, no running water but access to running water on the property)

    About You:
⁃ You are handy with (and have experience with and passion for) construction, plumbing, and/or electrical work.
⁃ Bonus if you’re into alternative building materials such as aircrete (we have an aircrete machine!)
⁃ You LOVE animals (chickens, horse and dog) but you’ll mostly be helping with the chickens and horse. No experience necessary, just a passionate love for animals.
⁃ Passion for turning chaos into order =)
    ⁃ Self starter attitude
    ⁃ Passion for community

    More About Us:
We are Annie and Aidan. We are in the first year of a life long project of creating a 36 acer food forest and story garden. Our land was (still kind of is) over grazed grassland which we are working hard to turn into a food forest, using permaculture design. As is Aidan's life project, he will also create walking trails within the food forest, telling different peoples' life stories, in a larger interconnected pattern to celebrate and honor the struggles and triumphs in the lives we lead. We are about Listening, observing, & playing. The story garden uses a variety of art mediums which will be chosen by the story teller. The main thing bringing it together will be the setting of a food forest.

The place with also be a mixture of a campsite and retreat center of sorts.

As far as us... we are a fairly mellow couple. Annie is a yoga teacher, Aidan is dedicating his life to this property. While we hope to find people interested in what we am doing with the space, also simply wish to share the space with others

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange.... the valley is a hub for travelers, artists, farmers, and many alternative activities. Lots of free music, vineyards, and people from all over the country (Once COVID is over). The larger community has a lot to offer, as far as specifically here; it is a place based on story exchange, learning, and playing. Can also learn about how to grow a food forest.

  • Help

    Help

As far as help, we ask for 15 hours a week 3-5 hours of which can be volunteer work in the larger community in an area of personal interest, people can do more if they wish but only out of interest. There is an endless amount of projects here to be involved in from food foresting to art, to fixing up the many long forgotten buildings on the property, working on an outdoor kitchen, shower, to making pretty walking trails around.... so on... as far as specific tasks travelers will have a fair amount of choice in things to work on. I also encourage travelers to use the space as a home base to see the area and enjoy the valley as long as you are being respectful and communicative.

Also please feel free to ask questions.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Tent camping, outdoor kitchen, outhouse... also an indoor bathroom and shower which is shared. There is internet, water, power. Also if someone was so inclined to work on one of the structures here... I would work with them to make a cabin or tiny house of sorts. During the winter, we will provide 1 person who commits to stay the duration of the winter as a grounds keeper, with an indoor private apartment.

As far as food there will be some shared meals, but also you will need to be fairly self reliant as far as having a transportation and meals.

    We provide you:
    ⁃ Fresh veggies, as available
⁃ Fresh eggs every day starting in Fall (our chickens are still young)
    ⁃ Shared outdoor kitchen (summer)
⁃ Shared bathroom with shower and toilet (All year)

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There valley is surrounded with natural wonders . There are three main sides which are vieweable from our property: The Black Gunnison Canyon, The Classic Rocky Mountains, and the Great Mesa (which i believe is the largest in the country). Breathtaking views and wilderness to explore.

As far as people, the valley is a hub for art, music, farming... so lots of free art shows, festivals, and vineyards to explore once COVID is over.
