    Description

We are a large family consisting of 1 Mama (originally British but living here for almost 14 years) and 7 children. Alfie 16, Layla 15, Isabella 14, Jack 12, Madeline 10, Betty 6 and Elsie 2. Then we have the pigs, dogs, ducks, rabbits & cats.

Our house is a busy house so don't request to come if you want a relaxing stay. Not only is our family large but we often have friends visiting and the children's friends frequently come to play.

We live on a beautiful property of around 2 acres, close to the city but far enough to feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. We are surrounded by mango trees, papaya, guava, lemon trees etc. We have monkeys, bush babies, chameleons and hyrax who frequent the garden.

We are a very welcoming family, we love sharing our lives with others & learning about new cultures.

Myself and the children speak both Swahili and English & we have staff members who are Tanzanian, therefore, you should be able to learn at least a basic level of Swahili whilst you are here if you want. For those of you who perhaps struggle with English we have had Workawayers in the past who have greatly improved their English whilst staying with us. You will have the opportunity to go to the markets and possibly visiting villages/ local families. I am happy to help make arrangements for you to take day trips/ go on safari if you would like.

  • Help

    Help

I am looking for fun, enthusiastic Workawayers who are ready to come and just get stuck in with whatever help is needed.
My ten year old Madeline is a gorgeous, precious miracle who wasn't expected to live to her first birthday but now she is TEN!! She has foetal alcohol syndrome and reactive attachment disorder and as a result she has severe global development delay, severe behavioural challenges and she is super tiny. She does not go to school, I am hopeful to find a volunteer with a passion and experience of working with children with special needs. I would like you to focus a lot of your time with Madeline, interacting with her, playing games with her, practising very basic maths, reading and writing skills and getting her involved in day-to-day tasks such as cooking and shopping for necessities. To work with Madeline there is no particular training needed just patience and a kind, caring heart. You wouldn't be left alone with her, there would always be someone around in the house. Her behavioural challenges are mostly directed towards me, which is typical of her disorders, generally she cooperates very well with other adults so I think working one to one with her would be very beneficial for her development & growth. The only thing I would suggest if you wanted to volunteer with us would be to do a little bit of reading on her disorders before you come, just to give you a little bit of an idea.
I also ideally would like to find someone who has great computer skills and can spend some time per week with my other children teaching them how to use a computer since they are lacking in these skills.
Aside from this I just would expect you to become part of our family whilst you are living here, assisting with very basic cleaning, cooking some meals sometimes isn't necessary but would be very much appreciated.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

The accommodation is a bedroom (queen size bed) & a bathroom shared witht he family. The room is set within a large 2 storey house on a big 2 acre plot with fruit trees, wildlife & so much space. We have security in place so you will be quite safe. Please note though, this is Tanzania so power outages are to be expected, we do not have hot running water so during the hot months we shower with cold water and during the cold months we heat water on the hob. We do have internet available, however, it isn't always completely reliable. We have a few cafes/ restaurants locally though where you can go to connect to their Wi-Fi should you need to. If you come to live with us please do not expect luxury, we are very comfortable but by no means living a luxurious life.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are located very close to lots of beautiful national parks, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Arusha, Ngorngoro & Kilimanjaro so it is very convenient to go on safari from here. I am happy to arrange for you to have long weekends off if you want to explore. Local swimming pools are a nice way to relax on the weekend. There are places you can arrange to go horse riding should you wish, we have hot springs which you can go for a day trip to. Taking a trip and exploring the next town Moshi can also be done in a day and other day trips such as visiting the native tribes people. I am more than happy to help you with organising excursions to ensure you get a good deal.
