    Hello travelers,

This is Cheri. And Jade is my partner. We have two little girls, 4-year-old Artemis and baby Posie.

Jade and I met each other while we were traveling in Asia. We had been volunteering through workaday together for about two years before we settled down in Tasmania. We enjoyed meeting people and experiencing cultures this way. Now we have our own place, we are happy to have the privilege to host some volunteers.

We are living on a property with tow houses. Our new house has two guest rooms and our old house has three bedrooms. So we have the capacity to host a couple of people at a time. Whether you are a single traveler, a couple, few friends who travel together, or a small family, feel free to write to us to see if we can accommodate you.

We are looking for a wide ranges of help both indoor and outdoor. You can write to us and let us know what you are interested and capable in doing, and we will see if you can be a good fit to what we need at the moment. We can always use help in cooking, cleaning, house chores and child care. Outdoor we need helps in gardening and bush cutting, chopping and moving firewood, plus different building and projects around the property. Our priorities change from month to month. We will discuss in details when you contact us :)

From where we live, the closest town is Scottsdale, about 10 minutes drive away. It’s not practical to walk or cycle to town. If you don’t have a car we can offer you a ride from our place, when it works with our family schedule. Our property is off grid and surrounded by beautiful spring, natural bush and river. We have plenty of tracks to walk on our property. If you love nature, and want to explore the beautiful NE Tasmania, this is the spot for you.

We are blessed to be living in one of the most beautiful spot in Tasmania. There are so much we can offer in terms of nature. You can spot all kind of colorful birds and wild animals on our property. Besides the usual wallabies and possums, you will find quolls if you go for a night walk along our driveway. Echidnas also like to hang around. Wombats are living along our river. I’ve also heard Tasmania devils in our bush at night. Our river is full of trouts, blackfish, eels and crayfish. With some luck, you can even see a platypus swimming along.

Off-grid living has been trendy. So this could be a chance for you to experience firsthand. That being said, we are far from living it rough. We enjoy plenty of modern conveniences and comforts. House is equipped with dishwasher, instantaneous hot water, washer and dryer, two TVs, game consoles, and starlink internet. But, we do rely on our rain water tanks for water, and our solar system for power. Wood is also required to stay warm through at least 9 months in Tasmania. So we always have to be on top of wood cutting, mindful of water usage and check with the sun before we switch on too many appliances.

We are a multicultural household. Jade is white and Australian, I’m Chinese and from Hong Kong. We have traveled many places.

  • Help

    Help

We can make a plan according to your interests and abilities. Help is always appreciated inside the house regarding childcare, general cleaning and organizing, cooking and meal prep etc. But if that bores you and you prefer to be in the garden, there are always gardening tasks to be done. We are also always cutting , moving and stacking woods for winter.

If you are keen and capable, there are plenty of jobs and projects to be done around the property. Our walking tracks will need bush cutting and mowing. Driveway will need maintenance. Deck shed need a security upgrade. We are also thinking about building a deck by our beautiful creek for yoga and chill.

Anyway, we will have to talk in details to work something out :)

The four of us live in the modern new house which was built just over a year ago. There is one gust room in the new house available for hosting. New house is nice and modern. But living close to us means you can't get away from the noises and chaos of young kids.

So for those who need or prefer their own space, you can have our old house all for yourselves. It's a rustic mudbrick house, pretty cute and charming. The old house is only a 100m away from our new house. But it's a private and calming space for visitors and volunteers. There are three bedrooms there each can fit two singles or one queen size bed. We can move some mattresses and bed around to suit your needs.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There are endless places to explore and see in this part of Tasmania. We are very lucky to be living close to some of the most beautiful beaches on earth.

Our favorite, the Waterhouse Conservation Area, is just a 35 minutes drive. Bridport is a seaside town just 30 minutes away. Bay of fire through St Helen is about 1.5 to 2 hr drive (perfect for a day trip or weekend). Tomahawk, Musselroe Bay, Eddystone Point are all breathtakingly beautiful beaches you can get to in a car in bit more than 1 hour.

We are also very close to Derby the mountain biking town with world famous trails. Many mountain bike shops offering shuttle services and rental bikes to beginner to pro-level bikers. I would definitely recommend mountain biking at Derby if you are interested. And the Hub at Derby also make some of the best pizzas in Australia.

Launceston is the city to visit if that’s what you’d like to do on your day off. It’s 1 hour 15 minutes by car. And there is also a bus you can take to go from Scottsdale to Launceston and back. Bridport is also accessible by bus.

Lavender farm is about 25 minutes away. There are also many great vineyards to visit in the area. Clover Hill, Janz and Piper Brooks are some of our favorites. Many local breweries and distilleries in our area, offering tasting and food.

The closest town to our place is Scottsdale (10 minutes drive from home), which is the service town of NE Tasmania. It has all the essential services we’d need, eg hospital, government offices, bank, supermarkets, op-shops, parks and cafes etc. You can find a decent coffee in Scottsdale.

If you'd rather relax around home, we have WIFI in the house you can use. And there are many tracks across our bush and along our river for walks, variety of serene and lovely spots to chill or meditate in nature. Feel free to take our mat, hammock or camp chair, you can read a book or practice yoga on our veranda, in the bush, by our river or ponds. We also have a cupboard full of board games.
