    Description

Hi, I'm Dora and I live in Terrasini with my family composed of three horses: Baraka, Sunny and Indigo; two dogs, Joy and Maya; and two cats, Artù and Minù. We live on approximately 1 hectare of land, we are surrounded by more than 100 olive trees and some citrus trees. We are regenerating and cleaning up the place, as it has been abandoned for more than 12 years. We have already done a good job with our friends, but there is still so much to do! :)

Our project consists mainly of educational and training experiences in nature, in contact with the Earth and with animals. We are working to create a space that can accommodate small groups of humans, to discuss and learn about topics that concern sustainability and, especielly, the topic of how to reconnect with ourselves and find back our way to our true nature, as human species in this biodiversity, sharing this terrestrial world with other living beings.
At this point it is important to say that all the animals are free to express themselves and live as free as it is possible in a human environment; horses are not ridden and we involve all of them in decisions regards to their life (come and discover, how :)).

We work in a network with other entities and with associations in the province of Palermo and Trapani, we organize residential educational camps, practical workshops for children and adults (recognition and use of wild plants, natural cosmetics, fundamentals of naturopathy, communication and coexistence with animals etc.), training for educators regarding the teaching approach in nature, events such as markets and small festivals.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I am a Hungarian girl who lives in Sicily for 13 years now, and I love to share the traditions, language and places I've discovered during these years. We work in an intercultural environment, which is always enriching both from cultural and personal point of view. Since our main approach is non-formal education and environmental education, the Workawayers can learn about these methodologies participating in our local and international projects.

Besides, my personal focus is to develop a methodology that concerns the relationship and communication between the human and the horse, without the animal being used. I hold theoretical-practical trainings on equine ethology and natural management, and I accompany people in improving their relationships with their animal companions (both with horses, cats and dogs). I am also attending the three-year naturopathy school to become more independent in the care of my family. I am happy to share all my knowledge with those who come to dedicate their time and energy to this place.

A typical day begins with feeding the animals and cleaning the spaces; often there is also a need for treatment because the herd lives freely in the land and therefore often have small wounds or injuries. After taking care of the animals, we dedicate ourselves to taking care of the land and plants: pruning, cleaning, taking care of the vegetable garden, arranging the fences, building benches, woodshed, shade structures, etc. from recycled material.
We also arrange and clean the spaces dedicated to humans (the house and the surrounding).
Sometimes we travel for work to Palermo, to Calatafimi or to other partners where we carry out workshops or participate in Mutual Aid meetings of other friends of the permaculture network in the area. 90% of these activities take place in green areas of the city or in the countryside.

Regarding the times: we get up when it is light and usually we retire when it gets dark, we follow the rhythm of nature (because the animals follow it and therefore we do too). This means that, for example, in the summer, we get up around 6; during the hottest hours we rest; and we resume work when the temperature drops (around 6pm).

Workawayers will be hosted in a 4-season glamping tent, which also has a wood stove for the winter. It is a large tent of 20 m2 with a double bed, bedside table, space to keep clothes and other personal items.
The bathroom is shared (in summer there is the possibility of using the external shower), and we have a large veranda with an external kitchen. In general we share meals, cook together or take turns. We do not eat meat and ask Workawayers to respect our choice and not consume meat in our home.

    What else ...

It is important to know that we are in the countryside and we only have one car available, which must always be available for any emergency, especially for animals (therefore we cannot lend it to Workawayers unless for short periods of time e.g. going shopping). However, the town of Terrasini can also be reached on foot, it takes you more or less 20-30 minutes.

Behind us there is the mountain with various hiking trails and from the land you can also see the sea, so we have an optimal position both for trekking lovers or those who prefer beaches. We are 30-45 minutes from the city of Palermo, reachable by public transport, where you can find cultural events and programs such as theatre, cinema, etc.
We also like to spend time with creative projects, such as painting, macramé, sewing, alchemy; another passion of ours is cooking, we experiment with new recipes, vegan alternatives. We like music, but we must always respect animals so we try to keep sounds low and rhythms-energies calm.

I mostly work from home, many times on the computer when I am inbetween the educational activities. It would be great to create a co-working space with others, for sure it would boost my motivation and help me be less distracted :) One important thing: there is no wifi (yet), I work with hotspot from my phone - the connection is great and it is more than efficient at the moment.
