    Description

We are Jennifer, Klaus, and Oswald. We are fortunate to live in beautiful California, where we have a house in the mountains near Tahoe and another little house on the central coast in Santa Cruz.

Both locations are amazing communities with lots of outdoor activities and interesting things to do. Both are also very dog friendly and bike friendly areas.

In Santa Cruz, we have our fully fenced oasis. We share it with family members in a separate house, who also have a second home in another part of the state. The yard is set up for outdoor living with plenty of private space for both houses.

We walk with Oswald each morning to one of several excellent coffee shops. We also regularly walk to and along the water front, sometimes to the dog beach. There is also a pedestrian/bike path that we frequently take to go to restaurants, grocery stores, yoga classes, breweries, wineries, a farmers market and more.

In Truckee, we live in the forest with the bears and coyotes. We are near hiking and biking trails and the ski slopes. The amenities in town are only a couple miles away and include some great spots for dining, coffee, drinks and art. There are also numerous shops for outdoor gear and clothing.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Jennifer is born and raised in the United States but loves to learn about and experience other cultures. So far only fluent in English but forever trying to learn more Spanish and German. Klaus is from Koln (Cologne), Germany and has dual citizenship. He has lived in the US for 30 years and is fluent in English and German. Oswald is a French bulldog, born in Seattle but has been to France!

We are part of a wonderful and diverse community of friends, in California and around the world, who are welcoming to newcomers and visitors. We look forward to welcoming some new friends to our global community.

Both Santa Cruz and Truckee have very active artistic communities and outdoor sporting communities (surfing, skiing, mountain biking, cycling, hiking, paddle boarding, etc.).

    Help

We travel a lot and in the past have taken Oswald along for the adventures, but last year he developed a health condition that is triggered by altitude (pulmonary hypertension). He is generally in great health, especially at sea level!

We are mainly looking for someone to take care of him when we travel, which can be for a month or two at a time. He is a really special dog, and almost everyone who meets him has told me this. He is very well behaved and an excellent companion.

He is 9 years old and needs a few medications every day, but all his health issues are well managed. We have good pet insurance and he has been very well cared for his entire life. He has also been on some big adventures, which he enjoyed, but it seems clear that he is starting to slow down a little.

He is very easy to care for and other than medication, feeding and picking up poop, he just needs a thoughtful companion who likes to snuggle. He thrives on routine but doesn’t require rigid routine. He lives for the morning walk to the coffee shop and connecting with people.

Other than that, we expect basic cleanliness, a little help getting the trash to the curb, water a few plants, and just maintain the property while we are not there.

    Accommodation

    Semi-private house

You would primarily be staying at our little house in Santa Cruz, which you would have to yourself. The property has another house on it, but both houses have their own private spaces. The other house is owned by a German couple who spend a lot of time at their second home in Southern California. They are Klaus’s cousins. If you cross paths they may invite you over for a glass of wine.

We can provide access to an electric cargo bicycle for getting around town. Public transportation is also readily available. If you are bringing a car, we can arrange for off street parking and charging for electric vehicles.

We are also willing to consider having someone swap places with us and spend time at the Truckee house when we are in Santa Cruz. Oswald will stay in Santa Cruz as much as possible.

    Oswald (9 years)

Oswald is a big beautiful Frenchie with a mellow soulful personality. He was born deaf and responds well to hand signals and body language. I often get compliments on how well trained he is, though apart from puppy training classes ( where we discovered he is deaf), he hasn’t had any formal training.

As is common for the breed, he has some health issues. None of his conditions are serious and all are well controlled with diet, medication, and a healthy lifestyle.

He thrives when he is included in daily routines and activities. This typically includes morning and evening snuggles and a minimum of one daily walk. We usually walk to a nearby coffee shop every morning, allowing some time for snifffs and connecting with other people and/or dogs.
