A smiling woman wearing a sunhat holds a baby in a front carrier. They stand on a scenic overlook with lush green mountains and blue sky behind them.
A small child in a pink jacket stands in a wide green field, overlooking trees, a river, and distant hills under a bright cloudy sky.
A stunning sunrise casts a warm orange and red glow over rolling hills, silhouetted trees, and a quiet pasture enclosed by a simple fence. Peaceful scene.
A black cat sits on a paved patio outside, near a ladder and white bins. Various tools and objects are scattered, and grass is overgrown nearby.

    Description

We are a family of five (Dad, Mum, and kids aged 11, 9 and 18 months). We live on a 15 acre rural property near Devonport, Tasmania. We have some sheep and some trees. We are a 10 minute drive from some great beaches, and 1 hour from Cradle Mountain (plus only a 10 minute drive or 30 minute walk to the CBD).

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We take the baby to playgroups and the park which provides a lot of social interaction with families with young children in the area. I believe that play based learning, and interacting with children is the single best way to observe the human condition, and a region's culture.

On our property you will have to oportunity to learn or practice (if you'd like): operating a small excavator, straining fences and erecting gates, pruning and propogating fruit trees, nuturing native plants and harvesting fruit and seeds.

Our sons learn Australian sign language at school, and are also very interested in new spoken languages, They learn well by teaching, and would be excited to practice Australian English (both spoken and writen) with you.

We have either a BBQ or roast dinner (depending on the weather) most weeks, with meat raised on our property, which we would love to share with you.

There is no much to see and do within a short drive from our place. I (Mum) am a former bushwalking guide and would be very happy to take you to Cradle mountain, Leven Canyon, and some of our many beaches, cafes, markets, cellar and farm doors, and botantical gardens.

  • Help

    Help

We are primarily looking for someone to help mind the baby, and / or assist with light farm work: mowing and weeding the yard, tending to vegetables, planting trees, repairing fences, cutting firewood. Most tasks we (Mum or Dad) and you, would do together: working on the property whilst supervising the baby. Bigger, ongoing projects include renovating the house, building a sauna and pizza oven, creating a greenhouse, and irrigating the orchard, if you were interested or skilled in those areas. If you prefer domestic (household) work we have three active kids, so there are always meals to cook, games to play, clothes to wash, stories to tell, floors to mop...

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Either your own room (with double bed and built in wardrobe) in the house with a shared bathroom, OR roomy tent or your own campervan / caravan in the lumber yard (a large flat area that is private, surrounded by trees and overlooking the ocean) 100m from the main house. We like to eat as a family as often as possible (especially dinner on school nights) and would provide all meals on the days / times that you are working.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There is lots to do in the area (within an hour drive of our place) and many extended adventures. I am very happy to take you on drives, walks, cafe visits and sight seeing and show you the area during the day, anywhere that the baby can go.
The older boys stay with their Mum every second week, so it is a little quieter when they are not around.
I go to Launceston or Hobart about once a month, so may be able to pick you up / drop you off there.
We sometimes have one or two cats.
I will add more and better photos shortly.

The 'lumber yard' is a 100m X 50m, flat, level area with plenty or room to park, turn and live (It used to be a horse yard). The water taps around the property are from the dam (not potable), so you need to fill up drinking water from the house or tank. We are on a septic system.
