Description
We are a long-time environmental/social ecology couple. Nancy is a professional writer and one of the Institute's original members. She came to PEI to build the Ark Bioshelter and never left. (Nancy is also a great animal protector. If you don't like dogs, cats, or wildlife, please don't bother to contact us.)
Phil studied Social Ecology with Murray Bookchin. He created one of the first certified organic farms in Atlantic Canada, which he ran for a dozen years before moving to PEI.
We founded the Institute. in 1995. Since then, our work has focused on environmental education (climate change), organic gardening and farming, green building, and local economic prosperity.
This year, at our homestead in Eastern PEI, we are converting a wooden fishing boat into a cottage and planning to build one or two unique belle tents. Our home constantly needs maintenance, repairs, landscaping and housekeeping. We have Internet access, pets, and can consider individuals, couples, or families.Types of help and learning opportunities

We farm organically incorporating as many 'permaculture.' techniques as practical. Prince Edward Island is considered one of the 10 best islands in the world and the best in N. America and it is also renowned as one of the top ten culinary destinations in the world. An Amish community is down the road and a Buddhist monastery is being built nearby. Added to this, the local farm traditions and East Coast musical culture is alive and well on Prince Edward Island.
Help
Located on Prince Edward Island, Canada, we are renovating a small homestead in the rural, eastern end of the Island. Our land overlooks the water and is near gourmet dining, an Amish community, a bustling farmers' markets, pristine beaches, world class golf courses and great, local music venues. The farm house has been renovated. In back is a rustic cabin with electricity and an outdoor shower.
We are building a new garden, propagating plants for a nursery and converting a large wooden fishing boat into a cottage. We also hope to build a small cabin/cottage.
We are seeking someone to come visit 3-4 days who can help with gardening and building at our rural homestead. experienced carpenters and landscapers are preferred. We would also benefit from some savvy computer folks that are comfortable with creating podcasts and webinars. Travelers may want to have their own transportation as the closest town is a 15 minute drive to Souris or Montague. Charlottetown is a 40 minute drive.Languages spoken

What else ...
Basin Head Beach is nearby and considered the best beach in Canada. The Inn at Bay Fortune (top 100 restaurants in Canada) is about 2 Km away. The Souris Show Hall, Georgetown Playhouse and Rock Barra Artists Retreat Ctr. always have a great line-up of programs during the summer. Brudenell and Crowbush Golf Courses are about 20 minutes away. The Amish have many shops on their farms, just down the road.
