Description
I run a kangaroo shelter, hospital and on site vet clinic for wildlife. Set on 60 acres of native bushland it is home to many species of native animals.
I have a team of volunteers that live locally and enjoy getting to know people from overseas also.
I am in my 50's and love caring for our beloved kangaroos. From the fully grown adults to the little joeys. I'm vegan, swear too much and rarely leave the property. I think I have associated with my captors :)
Position available: End of August. Exact date to be advised. 2 weeks to a month to be discussed. -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
I worked in cultural exchange for 20 years and hosted many exchange students during that time. I've found the best experience was when we all relaxed and acted and spoke normally.I like to tease a little but expect some back. I don't expect you to spend all your spare time with me and the best way to get around as we are isolated from public transport is to bond with our regular volunteers. They are friendly and like to meet new people also.

Help
There is a lot of cleaning of yards, washing and filling food tubs. Bottles need to be given to the joeys and food put out for the wildlings that visit.
You'll be working with another volunteer each shift unless they have a day off. Sometimes you'll work alone, other times with another helper.I'll teach you as much as I can about kangaroos
Hours are 7:30am to 10:30am and then 3pm to 5pm, although this shift is flexible within an hour and involves small maintenance work. You are welcome to feed the joeys in the afternoons but this is a voluntary role.
In case of emergencies etc, you may be asked to help out at other times.
(I do prefer a less regimented schedule for my WorkaWay volunteers. I'd rather see you blend in with the shelter, see what needs doing and do it and rest and take time off when you see the opportunity. This creates a more natural flow)
You must work to Australian time and speak English in the house please. -

Accommodation
There is a bedroom in the main house with a double bed and a bathroom next to it.
WiFi available
A basic breakfast and lunch is provided but I'll ask that you prepare dinner whilst I do nighty chores. There are times where I'll prepare dinner or we just all eat when we feel like it.
I'll do a grocery shop each week with different foods that can be utilised. All food stuffs on site are plant based. (Vegan) -
What else ...
My permanent volunteer team have always been happy to drop off visitors and collect from town or the train station.
I do not allow children or domestic pets on the property as our patients can be suffering from trauma.
No smoking
No red meat -
