We are deeply motivated by connection: whether with people, cultures, nature, or ourselves.

Deborah is a Brazilian medical doctor, she works online, and it gives her the freedom to explore the world while staying connected to her purpose.

Albert is a Canadian veterinary doctor. Part of the year he travels, and part of the year he’s in Germany, engaged in his professional activities.

We both share the passion for connection and discovery, and together we feel happiest when contributing to a shared mission, exchanging stories, and helping create spaces that feel kind and intentional.

We both value simplicity, authenticity, and the beauty of slow, mindful living.

I’m a medical doctor from Brazil with a background in wellness and holistic health. I work online, which gives me flexibility to travel and support different projects. My English is not advanced yet, but I can communicate and I’m always open to learning more. I work well with new technologies, including AI tools, and I can also help with social media tasks if needed. I’m happy to support with daily routines, organizing, cleaning, cooking simple meals, or gardening. I’m kind, respectful, responsible, and I love connecting with people and being part of meaningful environments.

Déborah lives in Salvador, on the coast of Bahia, Brazil, so she loves beaches, nature, and everything connected to the ocean.
She enjoys simple and meaningful moments, like: cooking together, listening to music, or sharing stories over tea.
She’s good at organizing spaces, keeping things clean, and cooking Brazilian meals (including a great caipirinha!).
As a doctor, she’s naturally caring and attentive to people’s needs.

Albert is Canadian, the son of a Brazilian mother and a Canadian father, with Italian and Argentine grandmothers.
He is married, and his husband is a professional chef.
Albert studied veterinary medicine in Germany, where he currently practices.
He’s also an excellent cook and has visited more than 100 countries around the world.
Albert speaks several Romance languages derived from Latin, including Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Italian, in addition to English and German.

Together, we have done several volunteer experiences over the past few years, both together and separately. We both value genuine human connection, cultural exchange, meaningful experiences, and contributing in a respectful and positive way wherever we go.

Unfortunately Deborah placed a greater emphasis on her work that shelter involvement. Filming and photographing was of more interest than getting to know the animals and their needs etc.

I was warmly welcomed and the property itself is large, comfortable, and surrounded by nature. The work Nikki does with the kangaroos is truly exceptional, she genuinely dedicates her life to rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for them.

One very important point is that the host is vegan, which was clearly stated in the listing.
However, future… read more volunteers should be aware that no non-vegan food can be cooked inside the house. For people who are not used to this lifestyle, especially in such a remote location, this can become difficult over time, particularly without access to a car to buy food elsewhere.

The routine and tasks were often not explained in advance, and sometimes we would only learn what had been done incorrectly afterwards. Nikki works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as she herself mentioned. Much of the operational guidance came from other volunteers.

In my specific case, I also work online remotely, and I believe there was a mismatch of expectations regarding availability. The listing mentioned approximately 4–5 hours of work per day, which I interpreted as a part-time volunteering arrangement. I always completed my tasks within the established hours, but during my free time I was not usually available, as I also needed time to cook, focus on my online work, or occasionally go out and explore the area.

I was originally supposed to stay for three weeks, but I ultimately left after two. Although I completed all of my assigned tasks during my time there, I found the experience emotionally more challenging than expected.

Another important point is that the schedule is very rigid. Tasks are expected to be completed at specific times of the day and are generally not flexible, even for general maintenance activities such as mowing the lawn or varnishing wood.

The location is remote, which is important for future volunteers to consider, especially if they do not have their own transportation and would like flexibility to go out, buy food, or explore the area independently. However, Nikki kindly arranges transport to and from Castlemaine train station upon arrival and departure.

To help future volunteers better understand the daily routine and expectations before arriving, I created a detailed guide based on my experience there.

Overall, I deeply respect the wildlife work being done and the dedication behind it. The experience with the kangaroos themselves was incredibly special. However, from a human interaction and communication perspective, my experience was more difficult and emotionally challenging compared to other volunteer experiences I’ve had in the past.
