Great experience !
Ellen was such a lovely person to be around - cooked every evening some delicious home-made meals, shared stories and was always happy to teach me some new words and expression. She was kind enough to trust me with her pets and her house and always made sure I wouldn't miss anything.
I felt very welcomed, and had a great time
… read more working with her daughter Louise who has shown me Carlingford and recommanded places to hike, and who made me feel like my help was deeply appreciated, trusting me with different tasks and responsabilities while ensuring I would remain safe at all times.
The tasks in the yard can be difficult and tiring at first as you have to get acquainted with the horses and sometimes carry a heavy wheelbarrow, but turn out to be very rewarding as well - and you will certainly leave in much better shape than when you arrived !
I highly recommand the local pub - especially on Thursday nights when they have traditional Irish musicians -, and Louise and Ellen left me plenty of space to see Dundalk and other parts of the country (even though you will need to have some savings aside as there is no remuneration for this job).
A great way to learn about the love of Irish people for horses and their sense of hospitality, see amazing landscapes and have a real taste of the countryside.
Thank you, and best wishes from Raphaëlle

An Unforgettable Experience – Highly Recommended!
I had the most incredible experience staying with this host for 3 months. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by Ellen and Louise, who made me feel right at home. They went above and beyond to ensure I was comfortable throughout my stay. Whenever I needed something, I only had to

The tasks were varied and engaging, and I constantly felt that my contributions were genuinely appreciated. Whether it was helping in the garden, assisting in restoring a cottage, or taking care of the animals (I will miss their dogs a lot), the work was well explained and never overwhelming. Ellen and Louise provided excellent guidance but also gave me plenty of space to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
The location is absolutely breathtaking! I went on several hikes in the mountains, and it was amazing. Experiencing the nature of the Irish countryside is something I highly recommend to anyone reading this. On my days off, Ellen or Louise showed me multiple places of outstanding beauty or took me to various events around the area. There is also a very good pub within walking distance, which I highly recommend visiting. Throughout my stay, I got to know Ellen and Louise’s family, and they are the best people one could wish to meet. This allowed me to gain deep cultural insights and become more proficient in English.
Meals were always a highlight. Ellen is a fantastic cook, and I enjoyed delicious home-cooked meals every day. We often shared stories around the dinner table. Louise has excellent taste as well and gave me the best ideas for sandwiches. Talking with them at breakfast, lunch, and dinner is definitely something I will miss the most, as both of them are talkative and love a good laugh.
Overall, my time here was nothing short of amazing. I gained valuable skills, met incredible people, and created memories that will last a lifetime. I wholeheartedly recommend staying with Ellen and Louise! Thank you for everything – I hope to return someday!

It was one of the best experiences in my life. They are a really nice family, open minded and friendly. The house has beautiful views, the room is very comfortable and it's in a wonderful place with mountains. There is a bar and a beach nearby.
Working with Louise helped me to do different activities and to discover other ways to live.
