    Description

I've restored two traditional stone cottages in a village on the island of Kythera, the most southern of the Ionian group of islands. I love it here, the proximity to nature, ability to swim on secluded beaches, walk through the countryside while always having a reality check with the chores of everyday life - although of late the latter have been overwhelming me. I would like to share the beauty of the island with like minded people who don't mind balancing chores with enjoying all the island has to offer.

I live by myself, have passed middle age, speak Greek and Australian and can offer my self contained guest area with a share kitchen for a week, two weeks or more in the month of May 2026, perhaps even a week or two into June in exchange for help with this year's maintenance program of painting, planting, pruning and furniture repair.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I enjoy sharing knowledge, information and experience, but will also welcome your experience, especially if you enjoy cooking. I have a few Greek dishes I am adept in, but keen to expand my range.
I will be only too happy to connect you with resources on the island and share my knowledge of where to go, what to see and how to get the most of our little jewel in the Mediterranean we call home.

  • Help

    Help

In May 2026 I will need help to catch up on painting and varnishing gates and some windows. I will also need help to till the soil and plant my vegetable patch (5 x 5 metres), as well as complete light pruning of the garden and shrubs - not too onerous, I assure you. I am also an avid furniture restorer, but have passed the stage where I can sand down pieces of furniture comfortably (currently nursing a frozen shoulder). So I need help sanding down lots of chairs and other bits of furniture to be stained or painted eventually if time permits. Someone handy in gardening, general house maintenance and woodworking would be perfect.

I'm happy to work alongside anyone needing guidance and share what I have learned over the years, I'd like to think I am competent in all the areas I seek assistance with, having restored these two properties and maintained them over the last twenty years - including restoring all the furniture therein. Only too happy to provide guidance where needed and coach as required. But, I will not be able to loose time on a total novice, anyone applying should bring with him/her/them basic skills and a reasonable level of competence in working with their hands.

If time allows, I'd also like to tackle some general household chores:
    - cleaning
    - sorting out bedding.sheets, towels
    - decluttering

    Accommodation

My self contained guest area, double bed, separate bathroom with toilet and shower. With WiFi and it's own separate entrance.
There is no kitchen in the guest area, but I will share my kitchen. If the applicant prefers, we can relocate an undercounter fridge and gas cooker to prepare their own breakfast. Main meals though will be prepared in the main house/kitchen.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

May weather is ideal for walks through nature, the water is also warming up and swimmable, especially for New Zealanders, Nordic folk and anyone from Tasmania.

There are plenty of sites of archaeological interest to explore across the island . It should be noted though that there is no bus service, I can provide a bicycle for the duration of the applicants stay. Having your own vehicle/transport is recommended, I am a twenty minute walk to the nearest supermarket and cafe.

I am an ardent anti-smoker, but appreciate many younger people still have not "seen the light" and have the need to smoke. This would be an ideal time to give it up,

My usual routine is to work around the house up to about 15:00, have a rest and then head down to a beach late afternoon.
