Opened on February 1, 2015, we are a private school located in Coxen Hole on the island of Roatan, Honduras. The school provides a K-11 bilingual school to children whose families are affected by HIV/AIDS, or who are bright students living in extreme poverty. Featuring a new campus with an expanded library, breakfast and lunch programs, and quality teachers, students follow a Canadian curriculum in English as well as a Honduran curriculum for Spanish to allow them to qualify for better paying jobs in Roatan’s burgeoning tourism industry and beyond.
We are seeking native English speakers with at least a high school diploma to volunteer at our school for a minimum of 6 weeks. Teaching experience is not required. Neither is any knowledge of Spanish. Our top requirement is a love of children! The school year runs from mid-February until mid-November. Depending on dates and length of stay, we may be able to provide accommodation for 1 volunteer.
This is your chance to make a difference with the most disadvantaged children and spend time in an island paradise!
Help with Computers/ Internet
While we do not offer language exchange, you will be interacting directly with the community and see it in a way that tourists don't. It could change who you are and what you believe forever.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
As we are restructuring our classes, our biggest need right now is a computer teacher! You don't need to have a degree in computer science or anything special, just be proficient in Microsoft and using the internet. Many of our kids don't see a computer outside of school but we want to be sure to give them skills that will help them in their futures, especially in a world where technology is prominent! Classes would be a couple of times each week for grades 3/4 through seniors. When you aren't doing computer classes, you would be assisting other teachers.
Volunteers assist in teaching English and English-taught subjects of math and science to grades one through eleven. Our students come from mixed backgrounds. Some are native islanders who speak English as their first language, while others are Spanish-speaking and learning English. You might be assisting with a lesson, doing one-on-one work with students who need extra help, or even leading a group in a lesson you come up with. Volunteers are encouraged to share any special skills, talents, or passions to benefit the students. Past examples include music therapy, art, yoga, guidance counseling, animal care, skateboarding, and more!
Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 6 weeks (full terms would be ideal for a computer volunteer). We have found it to be more beneficial for the students so they have adequate time to build meaningful trust and relationships. You'd be surprised at how connected you can become with these kids! Our volunteers must be flexible, hard-working, and willing to go with the flow. Life on Roatan can be quite different at times, so a sense of humor about life is necessary. You can make a real difference here, but must be up for the challenge!
Some shared accommodation is available, depending on dates and length of stay.
Roatan is a beautiful island renowned for its amazing coral reefs and diving. School ends at 2:30 so volunteers would have ample time to enjoy the island. Some volunteers also find work in the afternoons or weekends to support themselves.
