  • Description

My partner and I are developing an off the grid Homestead in the Puna district of the Big Island of Hawaii. Using agroforestry concepts, our goal is to grow as much of the food we consume as possible right here on the property. We are practicing organic farming methods and creating soil through vermiculture and thermophillic composting. We are fun, easy going, respectful people that love watching our plant babies grow and enjoy spending time at the beach surfing.

The Big Island is one of the most climatically diverse places in the world. From rainforest, to desert, to tundra (yes it does snow here), we have it all. There is so much to explore near us including many beaches and waterfalls in Hilo and Kalapana and Volcanoes National Park. We are thankful to have visitors because they force us to be tourists and to enjoy our islands.

I was born and raised on the Island and can teach you about the plants and animals that exist here on Island. The unique ecology of the island and the culturally diverse social network are worth experiencing and I would like to show you what I know.

Through our building and planting projects hopefully I could impart on you some skills that could be useful for you in developing your own homestead. Basic construction theory and soil health are enabling us to pursue our dreams in an economical way.

  • Help

We would like your help maintaining our homestead, creating new gardens, planting fruit trees and other native hawaiian plants, and composting. Our goal is to be able to grow most of the food we consume right here on the property while also fostering the growth of native plants and insects. Would be great if you are handy with a shovel and are able to get things done outside in the elements. From time to time I will ask for you to use some landscaping tools like mowers and weed walkers.

We will be building a greenhouse and other farm related structures and would love your help. Any experience building or with construction tools would be a valuable asset.

We have a large family tent situated ontop of a raised wooden platform. It is covered by a tarp so that you can sit on the porch if it is raining. You will have access to a bbq, a private shower(hot water), and drinking water. We grow food for ourselves and our neighbors to eat.

Most of the food we consume right here on the property.

    What else ...

I like to go to Honolii Beach Park to surf at least once per week. You are welcome to jump in with me whenever I head to town to do that or for supplies. There is a Local bus system called the Hele-on that makes pick ups in our neighborhood, but not many times during the day and sometimes it is better off to hitchhike. We have two bikes that you are welcome to use as well.

We are located in Hawaiian Paradise Park right in the middle of Pahoa Village and Keaau (about 10 mins away by car). There are bars, restaurants, drug stores, health food stores, etc in both places.

There is a beautiful hike to a turtle lagoon in our neighborhood that takes about an hour to do both ways. Volcano National Park is close by. Right down the road is Kahena Beach (clothing optional) and Hilo Town with all the amenities and beaches you would want.
