Thank you for your interest in our Workaway listing!
We are looking for help starting at the beginning of April though till the end of October 2020 right now.
We run a Bed and Breakfast in a big old house in Orkney off the north coast of Scotland from April to mid October each year. We have rare woodland for somewhere so far north, a 'burn' tumbles down to the sea at the bottom of the garden, the place is wild and beautiful. Orkney is a magical place with many ancient sites - Stone circles older than Stonehenge, stone age villages, Viking sites and more recent history from WW1 & WW2 when Scapa Flow was a huge allied naval base...
Visitors come for these things and also to cold water surf and scuba dive the sunken ships in the Flow, or cycle the open roads... We will make sure that you get to see many of these fascinating and historic places for yourself.
Here, as well as hosting BnB guests from all over the world, we also host groups coming to connect with the unspoilt wildness and these ancient sites. We sometimes offer Afternoon Teas at weekends and host Concerts for local performers. We are never bored!
We always appreciate help with everything around the day to day running of this busy BnB - waiting Breakfast tables, taking care of the bedrooms, doing the laundry and communicating with guests etc,. For work done around the BnB we can offer UK minimum wage less permitted offset for your accommodation, we also expect you to contribute toward your food.
Also we are looking for help with outdoor jobs around the grounds.. gardening, laying paths, chopping wood; work establishing a kitchen garden or cleaning out the hen house! There are also always decorating and maintenance jobs around our house we appreciate help with. For these jobs not directly involved in the BnB we offer full bed and board and lots to opportunities to explore
- thank you to WorkAway and everyone who has made contact and shown an interest is staying with us!

Help in the house
On your days off - go and see the Ring of Brodgar and the Ness of Brodgar Archeological Dig which is thrilling in its scope or..... take the local ferry across to Rousay, the island across the bay where there are astounding stone age sites that few tourists get to see ( we can lend you a bike for this!). Listen to local musicians in the bars or dance at a local Ceilidh. if one of Orkney's many Festivals is on while you are here we can help to get to some of those events....
This host offers accommodation and payment.
Help really means all aspects of running a BnB. Turning around bedrooms, tidying bedrooms, laundry and ironing, help with shopping. We also always need help outside, keeping some of the wildness at bay and maintaining the paths through the woodland, we want to re-start the kitchen garden and grow vegetables once again. We have ongoing maintenance projects - one example would be repairing and painting the outside of the windows. (See above)
Single or double/twin loft bedroom - with a shared shower room.
We also have two rooms in the Tower - steep stairs up too them - but unique accommodation!
All rooms are clean and basic.
We are stewards of a special place here on Orkney, a place that is well loved by many local people, it is bound up in the collective memory of this community.
We are planning Music Events here so you might be here to help with one of those and we host Sunday Teas that bring the local people here. As a BnB we host people from all over the world and are very busy during the short summer season.
Take the tiny taxi/plane from Kirkwall airport to North Ronaldsay island and go out with the naturalists (in the few dark hours that there are) to net and ring the tiny black Storm Petrels that travel here from the South Atlantic to to nest and breed on the island.
The Orcadians love to make music, there are regular events in Kirkwall and in Stromness (our two towns) in the bars and pubs..
In April Orkney hosts a folk festival, in June an international classical music festival; there is a Blues Weekend in September.... There is a Science Festival early September too.
There is a vibrant Art and Craft community, and a tradition of writers, storytellers and artists here.
Getting around on your days off: We are 14 miles from either of the towns on Mainland Orkney (Kirkwall and Stromness), there is a bus service into town on the main road up above the house. Please be aware this is a very rural location!
If you are fit and active we have Bikes and they are a great way to see the island. We can always drop you into town and pick you up if helpful..
