Description
Ilha do Pico is like a Garden of Eden in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Overwhelming nature, culture, safety and nice people. It has a pleasant climate all year round (winter minimum 15 degrees, summer maximum 30 degrees). You can take several expedition trips such as whale watching, climbing Mount Pico, the highest mountain in Portugal, at 2,351 metres (7,713 ft) and visit the Unsesco sight typical vineyards.
I have been living on Ilha do Pico for some years now and trying to find my way in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It can be challenging sometimes... But this bleaches out with the overwhelming nature, safety, tranquility and friendly people you will find here.
I am looking for Workawayers who can help around the house; garden, household chores and DIY projects. It would be a minimum stay of 3 weeks to a maximum of 7 weeks.
If this appeals to you, I would like to hear from you!

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
You will get to experience what a privilege it is to stay and live on Ilha do Pico. You get the chance to brush up or learn Portuguese or the other languages I speak.

Help
In the coming period-May 2026 I am in need of someone who is able to help and assist with building raised garden beds, DIY and some other work in the garden. You will also do household chores when needed. July-November 2026 the work would also entail harvesting and food preservation.

Accommodation
You will have a bedroom for your own use. The house has a big garden with all kinds of fruits and I am experimenting on growing vegetables and herbs. I cook simple, healthy diners with mostly non-processed ingredients. If you smoke, you can only do so outside the house.

How to get here
From Lisbon you can fly with TAP, Sata Airways, Azores Airways. If you are not able to book directly from Lisbon to Pico, you could book a flight to the Island Faial. Between the Island Faial and Pico is a ferry that takes 30 minutes. If you need to have a stayover in Lisbon I highly recommend Saint Jordi Hostel in Lisbon. It is cheap, clean and has a great ambience. When you arrive on Pico, I will pick you up by car.

What to bring
The Azores have a mild, temperate maritime climate with high humidity (70-80%) year-round, characterized by mild winters and warm, pleasant summers. Temperatures rarely drop below 14 Celcius in winter or exceed 25 Celcius in summer, though weather is famously changeable—often described as having "four seasons in one day".
Sturdy watertight shoes with a good profile. This as well mandatory might you want to climb Mount Pico.
A good jacket with protection against wind and rain.
Breathable, fast dry clothing. As the Island has a high humidity.
Clothes you wear in layers. Between December-May it can be fresh and windy, feeling like 10 celcius, though within an hour this can change and feels like 25 celcius.
Flipflops, watershoes to go swimming in the natural pools. There are no sand beaches on this Island.
It would be greatly appreciated if you can get by on starters (bacteria culture) to make dairy products like Greek yoghurt, kefir and seeds of Celeriac, creeping thyme and bring them with you. Costs will be reimbursed. These products need to be ordered online. Shipping costs can be high and it takes weeks before it arrives here on the Island.
What to do in your free time
Swimming
Hiking
Climbing mount Pico
Bike tours to explore the Island, in Pico do Lajes you can rent a e-bike for free
Whale watching tours
Sea fishing
Kayaking
Paddleboarding
Yoga classes
Chamaritta dance classes for beginners
Visit the Unesco vineyards
During the summer months in all weekends there are festas in one of the villages on the Island, with live music, dancing, food and drinks
Rules of engagements
Mutual respect: You can be who you are with your own values and norms. I expect you to treat me the same way. The world has become a place where people are very polarized. This remote Island is still calm and peaceful because human beings have more in common than they differ.
