*️️*️️ Priority will be given to volunteers coming for 2+ months :) ... but if you can only stay a shorter while, we can sometimes arrange something *️️*️️
We are a project dedicated to creating a unique and accessible platform for engaging the public in sustainability, community and social action, by promoting local activities to combat the global food waste crisis.
Before COVID we operated Israel's first social restaurant - based on rescued food (fruit&veg that would otherwise go to waste - from farms, shops and markets) where all could pay as they feel for the food and experience.
Now we are developing a sustainable food-truck that will travel around the country and serve different communities and organizations.
There may also be other events without the food-truck such as workshops, cooking contests and catering.
Because the workdays are not constant and the days can be long, a week could be with more free days, and longer work days (for example 4 days off, and 3 days of 8.5 hours)
Accommodation and half of volunteering weeks will be at the lovely Haifa Hostel (see accommodation section for details).
We are based in Haifa, the biggest city in the north of Israel :) This is where most of the rescue, and prep will happen - and the events can be anywhere in the country.

Learning about Haifa and Israeli culture, meeting many volunteers and people interacting with us, learning about kitchen work and creating an awesome social project with us!
The food truck is still in development so there won’t be work on it all the time (only specific events) but when there are events - the work will be mostly:
1. Rescuing vegetables once in a while (early in the morning), washing and sorting it
2. Kitchen prep work, chopping, peeling, making laffa (which is like a middle-eastern tortilla), cleaning the kitchen, organizing storage, etc.
3. On the day of the event, lots of physical work: packing the trailer + car, connecting the trailer, opening up the trailer at the event location (~1hr of focused work), operating the food service (making salad, wrapping laffa, operating the oven, serving people) , closing the trailer (~1hr of focused work), unpacking the trailer + car, washing dishes and putting the trailer in storage.
This part of the operation requires physical abilities to lift heavy items.
If you have skills in “backend” areas such as design, administration, resource development - these could also be part of your volunteering help.

The main form of accommodation for long-term volunteers these today is a collaboration with the lovely Haifa Hostel which hosts their own volunteers and needs extra help - and we have worked with them before on hosting international volunteers :)
The hosting situation: the hostel can host you at their place for the entire duration (in the beautiful German Colony neighborhood of Haifa, next to Downtown) and the volunteering work will be split in half between us and them - meaning 1-2 weeks volunteering in one place, 1-2 weeks volunteering in the other.
We sometimes have local volunteers hosting international volunteers in their home for shorter time periods.
Haifa is a colorful and multicultural city with artistic and social events - and also has tons of nature in the middle of the city, including mountains, springs, and of course the beach!
We can give you all kinds of recommendations :)
