My "micro-farm" was once a beautiful little homestead which fell into disrepair when the owners grew too old to maintain it. I purchased it in 2015 with the goal of restoring it to productivity and realizing my lifelong dream of having a goat farm, organic garden, and bed-and-breakfast.
A lot has already been achieved, but I am a senior woman and some physical limitations are slowing me down -- this place would really benefit from some youthful energy and building skills to help me complete some of the projects I've already begun. Projects include converting an old shed to a greenhouse, developing the back yard and putting in some flower/herb beds, fencing in the goat pasture, installing a couple of gates, building a new chicken coop, and quite a few other smaller projects. This October I hope to plant at least part of the pasture with garlic, so it will be necessary to cultivate and amend the soil, plant, and mulch before freezing temperatures harden the ground.
The reward will be in seeing a neglected property come to life again, and seeing the garden and animals growing and thriving in an upgraded environment. Bend, Oregon is also a popular travel destination, with lots of natural wonders as well as fun sports and cultural activities for volunteers to enjoy when they are not working.
Please note: Redmond, Oregon is in the high desert near Bend in Central Oregon. This is not near Redmond, Washington, which is a suburb of Seattle.
Help with Eco project
The Bend, Oregon area ("Central Oregon") is a beautiful, rural farmland and "high desert" environment, with many outdoor attractions such as rock climbing, hiking, cycling, camping, hot springs, river rafting and kayaking, plus a wide variety of cultural events ranging from concerts and Shakespeare to County Fairs and rodeos.
Learning opportunities on the farm include hands-on experience with such tasks as animal care (goats*️ and chickens), irrigation technology, building, and gardening. Volunteers can also meet guests who are visiting the guest house from all over the country and the world. Owner speaks some Spanish, and is willing to assist with learning English as well.
*️Please be aware that learning to milk the goats is not included. Our goats can be very jumpy around new people and it can be disturbing and stressful to them to have a novice try to milk them.
Construction, roofing, fencing or building skills needed.
Short-term volunteers (1-2 weeks) will stay in one of the guest rooms, share the kitchen and bathroom with owner. If there are two volunteers they will share a room.
Owner will provide groceries and do some cooking. Healthy, mostly organic meals.
We produce our own fresh eggs and goat milk, and some veggies.
Volunteers are free to enjoy the many outdoor and cultural attractions of the area when not helping out on the farm. They are also welcome to study, explore the surrounding countryside, or just relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. This farm is also a quiet little guest house, so volunteers will be asked to respect the needs and privacy of the guests and to socialize quietly or else party elsewhere when guests are present.
There is no smoking, drug use, or partying on the property. However, the farm is just five minutes (2 miles) from Redmond and 20 minutes from Bend, where there are many fun restaurants and pubs, shopping and movies, plenty to do. Because this is a rural property, volunteers will need their own transportation unless they are content to be dependent on owner for rides into town.
