    Description

Hi, we are a mixed couple in our fifties, me from the Netherlands, my husband from Slovenia. We have been living in Slovenia for 23 years, from which the last 16 years in a very small village near Žužemberk, about 50km from the capital Ljubljana. We would like to host a handy guy or a (older) couple with experience to help us around the house during the spring/summer or fall. My husband works full-time, myself part-time, from home. I have some medical issues that prevent me from doing more intensive, physical work. We would like help with gardening (weeding, mowing grass etc.) and some general maintenance like sanding and painting woodwork. Other projects might come up that we could work on together, or perhaps you have specific skills you could offer. We can offer you a spacious bedroom, a sitting room, an almost private bathroom, and meals together. Because there is no public transportation, using my car is an option if you have a license and driving experience on narrow, windy roads. In the weekends, we can also take you around to show you some of the local sites, go shopping etc.

The area is very quiet and green. We live on the edge of the village and have a big terrace with a beautiful view. Lots of possibilities for hiking and cycling (if you bring your own bike). In Žužemberk, 5 km away, there is a castle and a river where you can swim, two restaurants, postoffice and supermarket. This is best suitable for people who enjoy the quiet and natural environment and would like to experience what it is like to live in a small Slovenian village, where we often come together as a community to help each other and share in celebrations. I have my own blog where I write about living here and where you can get an impression of the area and Slovenia in general.

Because we have a small dog and two cats, we would like to host people who love animals! Our preference is to host one or two handy guys or a more experienced couple.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You can experience the authentic, Slovenian country/farm life. As a small village you will meet the neighbors and share in the customs, for example, when someone in the village buys a new car or tractor, we come together to celebrate with some drinks and snacks, There are several vineyards on the hill next to the village where you can learn about making wine. Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Take a cooling swim in the Krka river or go upstream to see the many small waterfalls. Or just have a drink on the banks of the river on the terrace of restaurant Koren, which offers a great view of the castle, dating back to the year 1100. I can also help with learning some basic Slovenian language (also Dutch, if someone would be interested).

  • Help

    Help

Our primary need is help with gardening. We have two small flower gardens and a small vegetable garden that need care; weeding and watering, so we would love volunteers who have a green thumb and enjoy working in gardens. Because the gardens are small, the work is not too difficult. Besides that, we would like you to mow the grass (once a week), which takes about 2 hours. Also, some general maintenance like sanding and painting the woodwork of the terrace fence, or helping with other small maintenance or construction projects that may come up. It would be wonderful if you could cook for all of us once or twice a week, or more, if you enjoy cooking. Because Slovenians eat a lot of meat (my husband included), we prefer someone who also eats meat.

We offer a spacious bedroom with nice view on the second floor of our house with a double bed and a seperate sitting room next to it. You are welcome to share the kitchen and terrace. Ofcourse, you are welcome to come sit with us in the livingroom downstairs as well. Furthermore, you have an almost completely private bathroom and a warm meal at the end of every day. The kitchen is shared with us, and you can make your own breakfast and lunch there. Because there is no public transportation, using my car is an option. The area is very quiet and green. • What else ...

    What else ...

I work from home, so I will be there most of the time to help with any issues or questions. There are many agricultural practices going on in the village that you can observe or participate in like cutting and storing hay, working in the vineyards, cutting trees and making firewood etc. This is an opportunity to be part of our family and a traditional Slovenian village. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our lives with you while learning about your home and life.

    Profile photo of Shuri

    Shuri

Shuri is about 4 years old also a rescue. She likes to hunt and play outside. She is not a very cuddly cat but does come for a cuddle every now and then.

    Profile photo of Gypsy

    Gypsy

Gypsy is an older cat with some minor health issues but still hanging in there. She has always been more of a loner. Sometimes she will come lay with you, if you sit still :). She likes to be left alone most of the time though.

    Profile photo of Ivy

    Ivy (10 years)

Ivy is a rescue from Serbia and between 9 and 12 years old, we don't know exactly. She is still very energetic though, especially when you take her for a walk, which she loves. She has a huge hunter instinct but is very sweet and kind to people.
