Description
Sointula is a small village, on a large island. Settled by the Finnish people, over 100 years ago, Sointula deserves its reputation as unique in the area. With hiking, biking, boating, and of course, wildlife, Malcolm Island is a treasure trove to discover. I have been working with a local marine mammal research group here for over 20 years, and can contribute to my guests understanding of the animals that frequent the area. I keep a field camp on the northshore of the island, as the Northern Resident Orcas are my main interest. Once the daily work is done, many adventures await you!
My home is on an oceanfront property, with two additional, smaller dwellings, which are the private sleeping quarters for my Workaway guests. Just blocks from the ferry, stores, cafes, library, and post office. Marine life at your doorstep! Orca, Humpback, and Minke Whales. Otters, Sealions, and all manner of birds.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Sointula is an historic Finnish village, much to be learned about the original Finnish settlers, as well as the current residents. I am a member of the local Marine Mammal Research group here, and can educate travellers as to how to have a spectacular experience, esp with the orcas that frequent the area.

Help
I esp need help with small carpentry projects, gardening/landscaping, firewood stacking, as well as some house cleaning.

Accommodation
A stand alone, private sleeping cabin, directly on the beach, will be provided. The cabin, the one with the magenta door, has heat and wifi, but no running water. Workers use the guest facilities in the main house. A handy outdoor kitchen, & shower, are part of the help plan.

What else ...
This area offers many cultural, and wilderness opportunities to explore. Just a short ferry ride from Alert Bay, which is a First Nations treasure trove of art, dance, and crafts. People flock here from all over the world to enjoy the diverse wildlife, including all manner of whales, bears, wolves, as well as land & shore birds. Many options to engage with experienced guiding companies in the area.
