    Description

Hi there! We are the Brouwer family: Fiona, Rik and Loek.

Fiona works as a business coach, Rik is an engineer and works as a construction coordinator, and Loek is our 9-year-old little daredevil 😊

We are easy-going, open-minded and laid-back people, but we also enjoy getting things done. In 2022, we moved to Spain to enjoy life to the fullest and create a place where we can live, learn, work and make memories together.

We bought our dream finca near Altea in the summer of 2022. It is a beautiful 5,500 m² property with an orange orchard, lots of other fruit trees, a vegetable garden and plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors.

We are slowly turning the finca into the place we dream of. There is always something to learn and something to do, both in the garden and around the house. We love sharing what we know, but we are just as interested in learning from the people who stay with us.

For us, Workaway is primarily about cultural exchange. We enjoy meeting people from different countries, sharing meals, showing them our little corner of Spain and learning about their lives, cultures and experiences. We want our visitors to feel like they are part of the family while they are here, rather than simply coming to work for us.

We will share tasks together, work alongside you and spend time together. In return, we hope to learn new skills, ideas and perspectives from you too.

    What we love ❤️

    • Cooking homemade meals
    • Sushi — definitely our favourite food!
    • Hiking in the mountains right in our backyard
    • Travelling and exploring new places
    • Making memories with Loek
    • Reading — Rik especially enjoys books about investing and achieving FIRE
    • Growing our own fruit and vegetables
    • Learning new things from people from different countries
    • Sharing good food, stories and experiences

    What we don't love 😅

    • Traffic jams
    • Queues at the supermarket checkout
    • Expensive insurance
    • Mosquitoes (seriously… what is their purpose!?)
    • Smoking

A typical day with us ☀️

There is no strict schedule at our finca, and we like to keep things relaxed.

In the morning, you can have breakfast in your own accommodation and start your day however you like. You are welcome to buy and prepare whatever you enjoy for breakfast — we also have our own breakfast routine.

After breakfast, we get together and decide what we would like to do that day. With 5,500 m² of land and a finca that we are continuously enjoying and developing, there is always something to keep us busy!

We like to spend time together and work on different projects and activities. This could be taking care of the garden, looking after our vegetable garden, planting, maintaining the outdoor areas or helping with everyday tasks around the finca. Rik also enjoys sharing his practical knowledge and showing you how things work, so you may pick up some useful skills along the way. If we're working in the garden, you'll get the chance to learn about gardening and growing things in the Spanish climate.

Around lunchtime, we all sit down together for a relaxed meal. One of the Workawayers prepares lunch, and you are free to decide what you would like to cook. We love trying different food and recipes, so this is also a great opportunity to share something from your own culture.

In the evening, we have another meal together. The Workawayers take turns preparing dinner, so cooking and sharing food become part of the experience.

For us, this is what the exchange is all about: spending time together, sharing everyday life, learning new skills, enjoying good food and getting to know each other.

You will have plenty of time to yourself as well, but when we are spending time together, working in the garden or eating together, we really enjoy doing it as a group.

Experience life on a Spanish finca 🇪🇸

Our dream is to become as self-sufficient as possible. We have plenty of space to experiment with growing our own fruit and vegetables, and we are learning more every year.

Staying with us gives you the opportunity to experience what everyday life is like on a Spanish finca and to take part in the different projects and activities that are part of our daily life.

    You can learn:
    • How to care for and develop a finca in Spain
    • How to grow fruit and vegetables in Spanish soil
    • How to maintain and look after outdoor areas and gardens
    • Practical skills and different ways of doing things
    • About Spanish life, food and culture

And cultural exchange goes both ways. Fiona was born in the United States and Rik in the Netherlands, so we can help you practise both English and Dutch. We would also love to learn about your language, culture, food and way of life.

Most importantly, we hope to learn from you too. Whether that's a new recipe, a different way of doing something, a new skill or simply a different perspective on life.

Would you like to come and experience life with us on our Spanish finca?

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

    Your accommodation 🏡

You will stay in the private studio underneath our house. It is a 55 m² space that was completely renovated last year, with everything new and everything you need for a comfortable stay.

The studio is completely private and has its own kitchen, so you have your own space to relax and enjoy some privacy whenever you want.

If you are interested in staying with us, we will arrange a video call beforehand. This gives us the chance to get to know each other, answer any questions and show you around our finca and the studio.

    Food & daily life

You are free to buy and prepare whatever food you like. The studio has a fully equipped kitchen, so you can easily cook for yourself whenever you want.

In the mornings, everyone has their own breakfast routine. On most days, however, we will have lunch and dinner together.

We really enjoy sharing meals, cooking together and talking about our day. During your stay, we hope you will feel like you are part of the family for a while — while still having your own private space to retreat to whenever you like.

If you have any questions or specific dietary preferences, just let us know. 😊

When you have some time off you can go the beach, go hiking in the mountains in our back yard, take our bike for a spin or just chill at our swimming pool.

If you want, you can use our car or grab our motorbike (when you have your licence A1/A2) to go to the beaches or explore the surrounding towns. Towns like Moraira, Benissa, Calpe or Benidorm are just 30 minutes form the finca.
