We; Nik 55yrs (English/German) and Donna (New Zealander) have renovated a run-down farmhouse and outbuildings on 1/2 acre in Northern France - the project is almost finished but there is always something to do :)
Nik is a potter by trade and also an experienced builder, Donna worked in IT and teaches english - but would rather be in the garden, cooking or doing handcraft.
We have guest accommodation (B&B and small holiday cottage) and we offer these spaces to our workawayers when they are not booked by clients. We share meals and downtime with our workawayers in the main house.
We have been Workaway hosts since 2012, we have hosted over 100 people and we really enjoy meeting a huge variety of travellers from all around the world - we learn as much from our guests as they do from us :) Please read our entire profile so you understand the area and the work we do.
We have an extensive garden that always needs care and we keep chickens. And we have 2 cats and a Jack Russell. We eat well from the garden, and love to process our own produce when we have the time (time being the key word!). This part of France is charming and unspoiled - but local transport is not easy and it is not a usual holiday destination.
Our life is a combination of self-sufficiency, good living and utter chaos! If you want to experience a different culture and maybe learn some new skills, we would benefit greatly from your help and enthusiasm!
DIY and building projects
Help around the house
We have both worked in different countries and many different jobs, we are open-minded and love good discussions. We don’t aim to pass on any particular skills - but we have rebuilt our house and garden from scratch and will openly share everything we have learned (good and bad!). We like to consider workawayer as an opportunity where we we can mutually learn from each other, particularly in simply understanding and accepting different cultures and all the nuances of humanity.
The main qualities we require from our workawayers are enthusiasm and a good sense of humour! :D And a willingness to undertake physical work for 4-5 hours a day (a total of 20 hours per week).
If we are tackling a project, you could be helping with building (timber framing, concreting, drywall) or limewash, painting and decorating. There is always help needed in the garden (digging, weeding and planting) and in late summer, processing the produce (sauces, jams, pickles etc). Most of the tasks are physical, often dirty - but hopefully always rewarding. We don't ask you to do any physical tasks that we wouldn't undertake ourselves.
We try to make your role varied and sociable (working with one of us or another workawayer if possible). We eat together for lunch and dinner and we like to socialise with our guests most evenings - that said, you are also very welcome to do your own thing.
You will have your own private double bedroom and bathroom.
UPDATE JAN 2022 - Happy New Year! Donna is having a knee replacement operation in late January, so in February we would have openings for a single traveller who wouldn't mind managing the housework, some meal prep and some gardening or yard work. Or a couple who can work independantly as we would be unable to work with you. From March onwards, we hope to be back to normality :)
In all cases, do please get in touch because the situation can quickly change.
No previous skill required, just a willingness to muck in and learn on the job.
We are 1-1.5 hours from Calais & Boulogne and we would make an ideal first stop if you are planning to explore more of France.
Limited internet access
We have pets
We are smokers
Can host families
We have a private courtyard you can park in with access to water and electricity - but as we also host paying guests in our holiday accommodation, we can only accept workawayers with motorhomes off-season. During the summer weeks, we have to save the parking for our guests.
Potentially... let's discuss. We have dogs, cats and chickens - that all live together peacefully, so your pet would need to be willing to join the pack and be kind to all these species :) Also we don't allow pets on the soft furnishings in our accommodation.
5 hours a day, 5 days a week - or equivalent there-of.
