Description
Hi! I’m Chiara, I’m 51 years old and I’m a journalist. I live in Grosseto with my 16-year-old son, David, in the heart of the beautiful Tuscan Maremma, just ten minutes from the sea.
We live in a detached house with a garden, right in front of the walls of Grosseto’s historic centre, so everything is close by while the house still feels quiet and independent.
I’m originally from Florence, where my parents, brothers and the rest of my family still live, and where I still feel very much at home. This also means that during your stay there may be the chance to spend some time in Florence, stay there with us and discover the city in a much more personal way than as a tourist.
We are an open-minded, relaxed and welcoming household, and I’d love to host someone curious, independent and easygoing who would enjoy experiencing everyday life in this part of Tuscany.
I have a chronic health condition, so there are some physical tasks that are difficult for me. What I’m looking for is just a few hours of practical help each week with simple things such as grocery shopping, taking out the rubbish, sweeping the garden or helping with occasional heavier household tasks.
I’d also be very happy to host someone who enjoys spending some time with David. He is 16, loves PlayStation and videogames, and speaks English fluently, almost like a bilingual speaker. I’m not looking for a babysitter, but for someone who might enjoy chatting with him, playing together or simply sharing some time and interests.
We also have a house by the sea in Castiglione della Pescaia, one of the most beautiful places on the Tuscan coast, and I can make my car available during your stay. Between Grosseto, the sea, the Maremma countryside and Florence, there is a lot to discover and plenty of freedom to do it at your own pace.
For me, Workaway is above all about exchange: opening our home to someone new, sharing different experiences, conversations and cultures, while helping each other in a simple and natural way.
If you’d like to experience Tuscany from the inside rather than just visit it, with the sea nearby, Florence within reach and a home where you can feel part of everyday life, we’d be very happy to welcome you. -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
I'm originally from Florence and I still have a strong connection with the city, where my family lives. I'm passionate about art and I have a degree in Art History, so I'd be very happy to share my knowledge of Florence, its museums, history and culture. My daughter Stella is 23 and studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. She's very sociable, so spending time in Florence could also be a great chance to meet her and experience the city in a more personal and local way. I also love taking little trips and discovering new places. I'm happy to organise day trips or a few days away with David and our Workawayer, whether it's Rome, Pisa or somewhere else we decide to explore together. For us, cultural exchange can simply mean discovering Italy beyond the usual tourist experience, sharing interests, places and perspectives along the way.

Help
The practical help I need is quite light: around 5/7 hours a week with simple everyday tasks around the house, such as grocery shopping, taking out the rubbish, helping in the garden or with anything a little too physical for me.
The other part is simply spending some time with David. He is 16, so I’m definitely not looking for childcare. It could be anything from playing PlayStation together to going to the cinema, swimming, cycling or just hanging out and chatting.
Because David is quite shy, we are specifically looking for a male Workawayer, ideally a native English or German speaker. David attends a Cambridge language high school and already speaks English very fluently, so with an English speaker it would mainly be natural conversation and extra speaking practice. A German speaker would be especially welcome, as having someone to practise German with regularly would be incredibly useful for him.
We are very flexible about how to organise the week. David spends every Saturday and part of Sunday with his father, so weekends are generally free, and if you want to take a few days to travel and explore other cities, that is absolutely fine too. Nothing here is urgent or essential: we can simply organise things together, as you would in a real family. -

Accommodation
We offer a bright private room with new furniture and a new mattress. The window overlooks the garden and a beautiful apricot tree, and in winter you can even enjoy the sunset from the room. The room is on the upper floor, which is warm and sunny in the afternoons. There’s also a desk and chair, and if you prefer more space, we can remove it.

What else ...
One other thing worth mentioning: I don’t smoke cigarettes, but I do smoke legal CBD hemp for therapeutic reasons. I never smoke around my children or in shared living spaces. I usually smoke outside, in the garden, or occasionally in my own bedroom with the door closed and the window open. Sometimes, while cooking, I may smoke in the kitchen with the large French door open onto the back garden.

Yoshy
We have a 15-year-old black cat called Yoshi, named after the Super Mario Bros. character. He has grown up with David and is very independent, coming and going as he likes through our two gardens. He sleeps with David and is very used to his own routine, so he won’t bother you or come into your room.
