Description
***we are always on the lookout for a person ( end of august through September) who loves cooking in particular and who would, as part of the exchange, like to help create fresh healthy dishes from scratch. Lots of ingredients here! ;-D. New inspiration is always such a treat for us and learning about your culture whilst trying traditional meals would be the ultimate experience. ***
Hi everyone,
After a few years off from hosting ... WE ARE BACK and having SO much fun!!
We are a friendly & outgoing couple with two teenage sons that have built our life, home, garden and business here in the rocky mountain countryside. We LOVE nature and waking up to the sounds of the birds, starting our day drinking our tea/coffee while gazing out at the mountains from our deck. From there we usually turn on some music. We like listening to good tunes ( open to all genres and of course happy to take turns being the DJ! ;-) ) while cooking tasty breakfasts. We grow a large percentage of our food here or source it as locally as we can. Our organic gardens are at the centre of our life, it's such a nice feeling to truly "know" your food. We also love to harvest wild growing greens in the summer, often making wholesome green drinks to help energize us throughout the day. No pressure to drink them though, lol, there is also lots of coffee and tea and the best spring water (gathered right at the source) always available too!! Aside from eating well we enjoy working on an array of different projects but more on those below. Both Dave and I spent our 20's traveling and living the workaway lifestyle before this program existed. We enjoyed every moment of those adventures! Being at a more sedentary time of our life we are loving having guests visit that share with us their adventurous energy. It brings different countries and cultures right into our home and teaches, not only ourselves, but most importantly our sons about the world. In turn we hope to share with you all that you are looking to learn from us during your stay.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Being in a tiny community that is located a long distance away from town we need to be very resourceful. We need to be able to fix what breaks and problem solve. We need to understand our environment and be prepared....what do you do when your pipes freeze at -40C? What happens if the highways close and can't get to town? Loosing power here isn't unusual either....what if it was to go off for weeks?
Growing our own food helps us live a very sustainable and healthy life, learning to preserve the harvest and getting the most nutrition out of the crop is essential. A deeper understanding of the plants and mushrooms around us is an ongoing educational process that enriches our life. Learning the basics and cooking from scratch is important to us. Grinding whole grains to bake sourdough breads, making nourishing bone broths, canning...all quite simple....but are skills that in the modern world we are loosing touch with. We would be happy to share with you what we know and learn from you as well. This is the exchange we love.Projects involving children

Help
On a homestead there is lots to do; always creating, improving & upgrading... there is always a carpentry project on the go at our place. Fall is when we begin laying the garden to rest. We do lots of harvesting (potatoes, carrots, beets, onions, garlic......) and prepping garden beds for the spring. In winter ( depending on the year ) there's always some snow removal to do. Inside the home we are baking artisan breads, treats and meals in the kitchen (did I mention we like to eat well!!), and all the standard house duties such as dishes, sweeping, passing the vacuum, occasionally washing windows...nothing more than the usual upkeep. Most important is to show up with a positive and energetic attitude as that's the vibe that we will be putting out. We like to have fun while we work and mostly try to work at projects as a team but there is always something to work on if you'd enjoy some time to yourself too, just let us know. :-)

What else ...
Our place is not in town or just outside of town, it's about 1 hour and 45 mins from the city along the most beautiful mountain highway. Other people live here but there are no stores, restaurants or bars. Be sure to bring all your essentials.
We are open to possible long stays based on a two week trial period.
Some activities:
While you are here you will want to take time to hike and explore the magical Ancient Cedar Forest where some of the giant trees are over 2000 years old. Some trees take 12 to 14 people to wrap your arms around, they are immense!!! A real connection with history.
Depending on the season you can take the kayaks out for a paddle on the mighty Fraser river.
Many bears, deer, moose around, bring your camera!
In the winter: borrow our snowshoes, cross country skis or come along with us on regular vintage snowmobile rides.
So much to do for the outdoor enthusiast as well as many peaceful places to sit and read, listen to music, enjoy the serenity.
Days off tend to be a balance off going on adventures and chilling around the property.
We love our campfires, swimming, boating, snowmobiling, learning.... there isn't much that we don't love. We are a family who is enthusiastic about living off the land and are working our way towards a more self sufficient lifestyle everyday. We have a passion for life and all the beauty it has to offer. Our favorite part of the workaway experience is most definetly all the wonderful friendships and connections that we have made so far and we truly look forward to all the new friendships to come.
Looking forward to meeting you!A little more information
