Description
Welcome to Tahsis Farm, a 187-acre property with 1.5 km of oceanfront, pebble beaches, waterfalls, all surrounded by lakes, rivers, caves, mountains, and many trails to explore. The property was logged 16 years ago and is in a state of healthy regrowth. Humpback whales (also orcas and grey whales) are here during the summer and fall. They can be seen swimming just meters from shore due to the steepness of the shoreline. Kayaks and SUPs are available to use; past volunteers have had incredible whale watching experiences.
I aim to have 2-4 volunteers at a time. There is no public transport between Campbell River and here, and so I offer rides between Campbell River and here approximately every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on my schedule. I have a negative review on my profile, and all I can say is that it was not a normal interaction by any means.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Travellers have an opportunity to see what life is all about in a small village with a strong sport-fishing influence. It's an interesting culture here where everyone waves when passing either by vehicle or foot.
There are wonderful opportunities for people to learn how to grow food and manage animals on a mountain side with very poor soil as a starting point. Other learning opportunities include construction, off-grid electrical power generation and management, water supply, waste water, and helping with a sawmill.Help
The Farm is very much in its infancy. Much of the work is general/physical labor, and revolves around essential items, such as power, water, and grey-water systems. Other tasks include making and maintaining trails and pathways, improving the soil in and around the garden by spreading woodchips, compost, and animal bedding/droppings, taking care of animals, assisting with building new structures, firewood processing, and watering and weeding the garden. More advanced jobs are available if you have the training and/or you are willing to learn.

Accommodation will be in RV trailers/campers and/or a cabin - all of which are clean and in good working order. There are also sites for you to camp if you have your own accommodation (bus, trailer, van, etc.)
What else ...
There are a lot of caves to explore (Coral, Upana, and more), a 90ft waterfall just minutes walking from the property, lots of lakes, river to swim in, roads and trails to explore, and a lot of mountains to hike, and Nootka Island/Sound is just minutes away by boat. Kayaks and SUP paddle boards are available. Humpback whales are on our doorstep nearly everyday and night during the late summer and fall seasons. Water taxis can be used to visit local islands and towns.

I had a beautiful time in Tahsis. we were a bit unlucky with the weather at the beginning and it was quite rainy but still alright for mid October at the coast, I reckon. I enjoyed having a building project and being mainly in charge for building a roof that wasn't really tiny. I'd love to stay another week or two, but our… read more
