  • Description

Our family has been enjoying Workaway Volunteers for over three years now! We love the connection with others from all over the world! We enjoy sharing our time and home with others and for those committed to a community and team based spirit! We are an extremely active and busy family wth many applicants wanting to volunteer and stay with us. We turn away more volunteers than we accept. Unfortunately, we don't have time for those who are not serious about a committed stay for at least 6-8 weeks and have a desire to serve a community of positive, health-minded high energy people and animals needing attention and care. We are an early to bed, early to rise community so please apply elsewhere if you are a night owl and have trouble getting up at 6am daily. Our home is in a rural and farming community an hour north of the city of San Diego, so this opportunity is ideal for those not seeking an active night life but prefer a more peaceful and low key setting nestled in the mountainous countryside. Having a car is not essential but is better if you can bring one. If you come from out of country or fly in, please be aware that we are 4 mile walk or bike ride to the bus that goes into the nearest town 20 minutes away. We do have bikes for you to use and they can be taken on the busses and sprinter train that goes over tho the Ocean and Beaches. Sometimes we have several volunteers and sometimes it's just one person, so you need to be someone comfortable being alone at work and during your times off. Many volunteers find several young adult activities at our churches such as camping, concerts, sports, comradely, etc. We love connecting you with any three of the churches we support in North County,

We have written a lengthy detailed profile that we ask you to thoroughly read if you seek to volunteer with us. After your review of our details and only If you are serious about volunteering with us, then we have an itemized list of questions we require you to submit to us prior to us exchanging a more focused dialogue and setting up a Skype interview.

We are a Christian Family with a 9 Year old outgoing little girl who loves Swimming, Singing, Reading, Yoga, Karate, Horseback Riding and Adventure! We choose to be meat and dairy free eating a whole food plant based diet free of processed or junk food and sodas. It's awesome when we have extra help with cooking however, house mom doesn't have much time to cook, so if we do not have someone on property with that skill, volunteers are given some staple foods and some funds to purchase and prepare food in the fifth wheel trailer with full kitchen.

We have 2 cats, 2 kittens, 3 dogs, plus a small flock of chickens that are entertaining and fun to work with! Some help developing the new chicken coop and run will make for more chickens and fun! We also have a hobby in Astronomy with a small charity for kids where we inspire them to look to the skies and enjoy the planets, moon, galaxies, nebulas, etc.

Southern California is full of many adventures including theme parks, beaches, mountains, desert. hiking and a beautiful climate year round! We have amazing wildlife like roadrunners, eagles, hawks, Wild Turkeys, Quail, Coyotes, mountain lions among a few. There are many charming and exciting things to do right here in our little country town not to mention the impact of festivals and events in San Diego almost every weekend. For those who love running, there are many half or full marathons or 5k fund raising runs every weekend somewhere in the county. Our hiking and camping options are unlimited and we can loan you a tent if you don't have one too for adventure on days off.

The projects we have on our property can be demanding physically and rewarding through accomplishment and team work. We require NON Smokers and those who are physically fit, have good strength and endurance who live a very healthy active lifestyle in order to be able to handle the physical demands as well as tolerate hot and cold temperatures. We prefer that those who are unsure of their physical fitness and strength discuss this with us upfront. Our goal is safety first and if you are not good at heavy lifting, digging or living a healthy active lifestyle currently, we are concerned our home projects are not the best choice for you.

We strive to live a healthy life style, including a vegetarian healthy diet. Only vegetarian food is Consumed on premises and it is a requirement that the volunteers during their stay with us on or off property, refrain from smoking and using any alcohol or drugs. Due to the nature of raising a young impressionable child who looks to role models etc, we ask you to avoid junk food and only display for all residents living here a positive attitude and committed presence. We provide detailed training in the first week and do require excellence with all tasks. Please if you are seeking to do as little as possible, this team is not for you. We have had volunteers now for three years all year round and are quite clear of our needs, our expectations and what can be accomplished by volunteers. It's a waste of time for our team to have someone seeking to live a life of mediocrity and poor work ethic. We will and have teminated volunteers shortly after arrival, so plz go to a hostel or hotel if us seek to hang out or do as little as possible during your volunteer hours. There are many needs in the world right now as we have a highly divided world, we have been experiencing hurricane after hurricane, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes and turmoil. We see this time as an opportunity to step up and connect with others to create amazing opportunities here and in our community and country. Our house mom is a retired RN and is awaiting deployment to one of the hurricane ravaged areas to help with the Red Cross. Even our young child is involved with many duties here at home, helps at various community charitable opportunities. We quite frankly don't have time for those who focus on themselves, but are compassionate and happy to help and do a great job! If you aren't committed to that type of experience, it just won't work here with our team and family. It's better you seek another experience or stay at a hostel or hotel.

Our volunteers and our family are seriously committed to personal development, leadership, goal setting our church and serving others. We seek only like minded individuals who strive to be in alignment with a purpose driven, results oriented life.

You can stay a short or long time, but if coming short term, must be minimum 6-8 weeks but can stay longer and is more favorable for several months or more. There are many part time jobs available in the area for you to earn extra income and we would be happy to give you some suggestions.

We are able to accommodate several workaway volunteers at a time for inside accommodations, trailers and cots for camping style tenting. We have many needs on our property that break down into 4 areas, so we can have individuals that have different responsibilities and skills working on any given day. The 4 areas of help needed are for Outside help with construction, weeding, raking, tree trimming, fence repair or building, shed building, Inside cleaning and cooking, Animal Care and Technical/Computer Needs with Web site, digital recording, itunes and computer work. We do honor requests by volunteers to focus on a few projects, but do require some rotation and sharing of tasks based on a weekly schedule.

We require 25 hours a week volunteering. As well, all Resident Volunteers are required to be scheduled 2-3 nights a week on house duty (meaning you are on site for safety reasons). We live in a wildfire zone and therefore due to the number of animals or others who may need to evacuate if a fire came into area we need to ensure someone is on the property at all times especially during night time hours.

Under some circumstances, for those who qualify, additional hours to earn stipends or spending money can be arranged and only after the initial 2 weeks trial period upon arrival indicating more responsibilities by you are manageable.

We seek those who are healthy, physically fit, efficient, flexible, task oriented, have high level of energy, healthy active lifestyle and a positive attitude, focused on goal setting and serving with excellence. Sorry but for safety reasons, we cannot accommodate children other pets or pregnant ladies in our remote area. Safety is our number one goal and do to the nature of outside project help, it is important to be physically fit to manage the demands as well as possible help in hot and cold temperatures. Please only apply if you are able and willing to fully commit to working hard in the many rigorous projects we have outlined. We do expect personal responsibility when it comes to safety, hydration, minimum 7-8 hours of sleep and complete balanced food intake daily

Most times your hours of help will be scheduled ahead of time and work 4 hours in a row, but there are exceptions and needs for flexibility on everyone part. (ie weather plays a role and animal care is broken up due to the nature of the job, however the chores can be shared among more than one person as well). Please be prepared for early mornings rising at 6am with bedtimes 10-11pm when you are scheduled to work the next day. We also need some help during evening hours at times unless its a construction project that goes usually for the morning hours only . Most tasks begin after breakfast. Volunteers are expected to get a good night sleep at a decent hour and be up by 6am then out of the living areas during the day leading an active life either working on projects on the property or enjoying the surrounding area and opportunities of southern California during time off. The living quarters are off limits during daytime hours no exceptions. We have an amazing property for you to enjoy and our community has an adventure daily that awaits you. If you seek to relax and enjoy your surroundings, please go to a hostel or hotel, this is not the place for you.

Our family enjoys sharing the opportunities and experiences our community and Southern California offers. We live a busy full life, attend church and attend many community functions. We are also very committed to leadership, goal setting and personal development work through Klemmer & Associates, Warriors at Heart and we have scholarshipped many workaway volunteers. We will often invite volunteers to experience what our area has to offer and join our family when we attend Church usually 530-630pm for Saturday Service as well as other activities, functions and special occasions so that you too can experience the full impact of a workaway stay! The church we attend is North Coast Church in Vista, CA. Our daughter is in the choir at Emmanual Faith in Escondido which also has amazing opportunities for young adults and extra curricular activities like camping, concerts, etc. you can review both sites online for info further as you will find there are plenty of opportunities to help others in the community through the church as well, plus there are many youth and young adult activities and meetings with more info on the site.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Despite our very detailed outline of what our projects require and that we value and seek only people with a positive and connected attitude, we have had some folks who come to us believing they are here to be on a retreat, barely function or able to contribute to the teams physically demanding projects, they are smokers, animal eaters, eat junk food and worse, or have been found to be using drugs. Even though we require a minimum of 6- 8 week stay, please be advised if you arrive here and are not committed to our healthy and positive lifestyle, prove to be extremely high maintenance, requiring significant micromanagement, don't work well with teams or lack efficiently at tasks, you cannot contribute to a united positive energy atmosphere, this is not the place for you and you will be asked to leave immediately. We will then provide a ride to the Bus station in Escondido.

If you want to join us and are serious, then we will need some detailed information up front from you in order to ensure we both will have a good experience by having a great match! We have spent a good amount of time describing who we are and what kind of volunteers we seek. We also know that we are asking for very detailed information from volunteer applicants. You may be unsure if this is the place for you to experience and you may have a few questions before you send us a detailed submission, so please feel free to ask any questions that have not been addressed in our profile and we would be happy to answer them first.
