I am Nao, a farmer in Tokushima Prefecture. We produce organic vegetables (onions, garlic, broccoli, potato, tomato), blueberries and rice. We are planning to make a small community center. That means we live together in a beautiful traditional Japanese farmhouse and of course we eat our meals together. I need your help making my dreams come true!
You will get to experience sleeping in a tatami room in our large, traditional farmhouse in Awa. Your working hours will be in the morning (eg. 7am until 1pm OR 5am until 11pm), with one hour of break time, and then we have lunch together. We offer a very relaxed and friendly working environment. Weekends are all yours!
In your free time, you are able to take a bike ride or just enjoy the weather & scenery and take a break from your busy life. In the evening we will have dinner together and I can introduce the Japanese culture to you. Depending on when you're here, we may be able to enjoy local events like the Firefly Festival or the Awa Odori (a big traditional dance festival). Also on July 15th, my farm opens up and offers free blueberries to all visitors!
We are interested in natural farming practices and communities and are looking for volunteers to stay for more than a month.
When I was younger, I did some working holiday in different countries too. I have spent 2 months in Indonesia, 6 months in Fiji, 1 month in Korea, and 6 months in Australia. And now I want to give you a chance to have a working holiday in the serene countryside of Japan!

Japanese and some English. Other staff may not speak much English.
You will stay with your fellow volunteers in a big traditional Japanese house, full of sliding screen doors, Japanese art, a kotatsu dining table, a samurai suit, and other treasures. You will sleep in a shared tatami room. We have a large hot shower and bath with towels provided. For breakfast, groceries are provided, and lunch & dinner we will prepare and enjoy together!
Blazing fast wi-fi is available throughout the house. There is also a large television.
I am happy to pick you up at Gaku train station (on the Tokushima Line) upon arrival. If you need more information about getting here just let me know!
English is generally spoken among guests. However, because other staff can not speak much English, it is preferable for those who can speak a little Japanese, or those who are interested in studying the language.
Mima is a quiet and scenic town of about 50000 people, surrounded by rolling hills. There are many fields and agriculture is the main industry. There is a big and beautiful river, several shrines, and hiking trails within walking distance. In Tokushima prefecture there are many mountains and of course the ocean. Therefore you can enjoy outdoor sports such as climbing, trekking, rafting, canoeing, jogging, cycling,...
The nearest supermarket, restaurants, and convenience stores are an easy 1km walk from the house, although trains and bus stations are bit further.
I love talking with people. We are looking for people who enjoy healthy living and outdoor work. Come and enjoy your country life in Japan. We will support you!
Surely, your heart will be excited.
