We are Lorna (39) and Max (53) and we live with our children (9 and 5) in a large 5 bedroom house in the Old Swan suburb of Liverpool. We have a large garden and good wifi. The primary line bus stop is a two-minute walk from our front door and Liverpool city centre is around a 10-minute ride for £2.40 round trip.
We are an English/American/German family and we speak both English and German at home, with some French, a little Spanish, Dutch (Flemish) and Icelandic, and some familiarity with other languages, too. We have previously lived in Germany and the USA, and have also separately lived in Iceland and Ireland.
We found out about this through our friends here who also host but unlike them, we have to get our eggs from the supermarket. We have varied and diverse interests and look forward to learning about you, too. Max has a flexible schedule and is usually at home during the day while Lorna works full time as an analyst. There may be times when you are alone during the day but that is unusual - we will normally have at least one other person around so you won't get lonely! The children better be at school during the day... We enjoy interesting discussions, although what constitutes "interesting" is subject to the thoughts of and interruptions from primary school-aged children who actively participate in nearly all conversations.
We go to the beach occasionally and enjoy doing fun and unusual things together. Our guests are always welcome to join in our adventures because we enjoy making memories. We try to maintain a reasonably eco-friendly lifestyle and are teaching this to our children, but in an everyday manner of living rather than teachy or preachy.
Liverpool is a wonderful, beautiful, and friendly city. There are lots of museums and art galleries along with interesting historical architecture. The city offers many restaurants, bars and cafes, and the large student population ensures choice-filled nightlife. And, of course, there's everything Beatles and Mersey Sound. There are three universities and several colleges and other schools offering language courses.
We cook dinner almost every night; if you can cook and would like to share your cooking with us, bring it. We eat meat but also cook vegetarian during the week as we have both been vegetarian or vegan at different times. We're fine with vegetarian diets; children make it difficult to accomodate vegans while other food restrictions are impossible unless you provide for yourself.
We don't smoke and do not accept smokers/vapers. For medical reasons visitors must also be fully vaccinated. We prefer shorter to longer stays at the moment.
Our home is a work in progress. We are living in the house as we work on it and have a list of small and larger jobs -- many of them painting and decorating but also general maintenance items, along with some creative projects you may want to help us with. General cleaning and housework is always welcome.
Weather being what it is in Britain, we're currently looking for someone who can help us with garden maintenance which includes some larger plants, their roots, and a shovel. We aren't taskmasters and aren't governed by a strict schedule. We're flexible with working days and times as long as the jobs are completed.
We prefer to host one person at a time but are happy to consider couples.
The house is somewhat noisy in the morning, quiet during the day, near-deafening late afternoon through evenings, and rather peaceful once the children have gone to bed. Weekends vary.
Help in the house
There are plenty of free museums and galleries in Liverpool, 2 cathedrals, 2 football stadia, a red squirrel reserve, and a beautiful coastline. If you are an artist you can of course take photos of your work for your portfolio.
We are looking for someone creative who can help in the garden and are really interested in language exchange. We have a constant list of jobs in our renovation.
If you have any other skills that you think might be useful then let us know. We are open to suggestions.
