Welcome to a project in Meta which is making a difference!
We are a family driven Guesthouse and Language Project in Acacías, Meta. Stig (29, Norway) and I (Johana (30, Colombia)) met six years ago, and we shared the same dreams for the future. We were both working for multinational companies back then, but we had desires of doing something different. We worked hard and saved money to do something with a greater purpose.
After one year of construction, we opened our doors in 2016 for everyone interested in learning a second language. We are hosting locals and foreigners eager to learn about people and cultures. Our foundation has paid and sponsored classes and the locals can choose if they want to Volunteer or Study with us.
This is a social project we are building and we are looking for flexible people willing to help us in the social cause of educating and spreading culture. It is an opportunity exclusively for people who want to learn and practise their Spanish while living an immersion in the Colombian culture.
- Provide more free English education to local students
- Find investors to help us
- Be the best place to exchange languages in the region.
- Improve our bar/restaurant
A welcoming feeling, combined with great weather and an inclusive community.
A place where people feel comfortable as they are.
Location / area
Acacías is a typical Colombian “pueblo” and we live near the entrance of the town, by the main road towards Guamal.
3 hours from Bogota, 30 minutes from Villavicencio the capital City of Meta
Acacías is a popular vacation spot for some Colombians (especially people from Bogota), because of its warm weather and many rivers but it’s quite new for tourists. Local tourists come here to enjoy clean air, hike in the mountains or to enjoy family time by the river.
We are in the “llanero" region, near the foot of the Andes mountains. From here and east, it’s mostly plain fields until the Amazon region. Because of it’s wet and warm weather, Acacias has a lot of “fincas” (farms) and “vaqueros” (Colombian Cowboys), and they’re including and friendly towards tourists. Welcome to the real Colombia! A place where time is not too important, where you wake up when the sun rises and feel tired soon after sun set.

This is an opportunity for people looking for a good place to settle down for a while and learn Spanish.
We are building a bilingual community, in this place that has been strongly affected by the armed conflict, here is a very safe area if you worry about your safety, but years ago was a conflict area and for instance now is less developed socially and economically and in terms of tourism than the rest of the country. This is a place where locals and foreigners can meet and learn languages, culture and more. The English level in the region is low, so it’s a good place to practice your Spanish, and to teach English.
This is a “gringo”-free area (well, besides us), our work team usually range from 6 to 10 volunteers at a time... and is therefore great for practicing your Spanish. The locals are not used to foreigners, and they are curious about getting to know you.
Here, you will have the opportunity to learn Spanish, learn about Colombian culture, and teach in our English academy. People of all ages will come to the hostel to practice English in a fun and open environment with a program that includes cool activities like rafting, horseback riding, climbing, movie clubs, art club, sports club, and others.
We have students from 4 to 60 years old, most basic levels. The only requirement we have for our local students is for them to be willing and motivated to learn English. That is why we have this place, only people wanting to learn languages, explore cultures and learn about the world, can participate!
We are a guesthouse and at the same time have a non-profit organization that promotes bilingualism in the region, so we operate as a guesthouse mostly during high season, which is usually in December, June, Holy week in March and October where there is a big festival in town. The School is open most of the year, but we stop classes during the Christmas season, from December 15th until January 15th more less. The guesthouse together with the paid language classes makes this project live.
Your work will depend on your skills and the length of your stay. We ask that volunteers stay a minimum of 1 month to avoid too much turnover & disruption to the English classes, but we can make exceptions for 3 weeks depending on your skills.
They will be a mixture of:
- Cleaning and maintenance
- English Classes
- Social Media / Marketing *️️️️️️️️️NEW
- Customer Service

You’ll be doing a lot of different tasks, depending on ongoing projects and season. We usually need help within different fields, so if you have experience or expertise within; construction, landscaping, plumbing, electricity, architecture, recycling, teaching, cooking, marketing or what so ever, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
We are looking for outgoing and friendly people who can help us grow. We also need daily help with general maintenance of the property; cleaning, constructing, planning and child care.
You don't need to be a teacher (but experience with people, teaching etc. will help), we are building a method to follow, and we will go over training and give you tips and info on how to teach English. We are currently working on future lesson plans and we're always trying to update our material. You need to be a friendly and outgoing traveler, who speaks fluent English and want to spend some time in a typical Colombian town (small city), full of nature and warm weather. This opportunity is for those interested in learning Spanish, sharing knowledge and learning how to optimize your travels in South America.

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT BUDGET $$$
Other expenses you may have should be very low but mostly depending on you... like partying in town (which is fun and cheap according to other previous volunteers) we will be sending you a complete pdf about budget expectations so you have a clear idea about how much you will use in this town.
The tourism in this area is quite of a challenge since is not that developed so we need to arrange excursions in advance and hope the best everything will be as planned, which has happened when we have organized cool excursions art and we will also share info about the excursions we have done and prices.
