We are a British-American family living in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains in Steamboat Springs, Ski Town USA. Famous for its champagne powder we live in a premier ski resort, where we own and operate an all-natural, outdoor pig farm , supplying our local restaurants, residents and tourists with the finest pork. We strive for sustainability using natural systems as our guide. Pig farming at this altitude, in this climate, with long harsh winters has its challenges, but the lifestyle offers as many opportunities to play hard as there are to work hard! Its not for the faint of heart, but for the right person/people (preferably a couple) wishing to experience life in the rugged West (with fantastic skiing on top) this could be a once in a lifetime experience!
Our family is Josh and Kirsty (in our early 40s) and our two young girls, Esmé (6) and Sasha (3). Josh runs the farm and is Colorado through and through, a modern permaculturally-leaning old school cowboy!. Kirsty is originally from the UK and is currently in school for Speech Language Pathology and works at the local library as a children's librarian. We travelled extensively before we had a farm and kids and intend to again one day and are excited about the idea of armchair traveling by having other people in our home!
Help with Eco project
Our farm is growing rapidly and Josh needs help on a daily basis with all farm operations, including driving tractors, building fence, feeding pigs, castrating, moving animals etc. We have recently taken on a sales and marketing guy who deals with all our wholesale and retail and we have help with the bookkeeping, but we need practical help on the ground! It is not a very forgiving ground but it is outdoor pig farming in the most beautiful way possible. Most of our pigs communally farrow and many choose to build their own nests to have their piglets. And there is always plenty of upkeep and maintenance to do for the the land and the animals. The pigs are incredibly social and intelligent with great and different personalities! This is an amazing opportunity to learn a little about what remarkable animals pigs are and how to farm them from someone who has successfully been managing a loving operation for sometime. Our farm is very well respected in our community and this is mostly down to Josh and his integration of new and old school methods to a pretty unique climate.
It is essential that volunteers are happy driving trucks and towing trailers. We think a couple would get a lot out of the experience and help would always be welcome with the kids and household as well!
English (UK and USA), French, minimal Spanish
A double bedroom in our family home with ensuite private bathroom. Our home is not actually on the land we farm but is half way between the ski mountain and the farm, about 2 miles from the town of Steamboat.
We have wifi and all homely comforts. Volunteers would have use of a vehicle and there is also a free community bus that runs to town and to the ski resort. We would expect volunteers to eat with us and help with cleaning up after dinner! We eat conscientiously and are lucky enough to eat our own meat that has been raised with great love and respect. Catering to vegetarians and vegans would be more challenging for us!
Steamboat really is a fabulous ski resort that offers a great mix of terrain for the beginner to the Olympian. And its not just a ski town. It offers much else besides: in the winter ice fishing, the renowned winter carnival and mardi gras, through to tubing down the river in the hot summer and fly fishing, hunting in the autumn, to year round free music festivals, Arts festivals and a Yoga and movement fest. The town has numerous live music venues, a theatre, cinema, and many art galleries. There really is something for everyone here.
