I am a Brazilian woman, Daniela, residing in wonderful Boraceia, a beach town near Bertioga, two hours from the city of São Paulo. The coast in this area has plenty of beaches, surfing, hiking trails and excursion to many islands.
Our English school has been growing and improving. We teach how to conduct conversational English from beginners to intermediates in an interactive way. Our idea is to equip and empower local people of all ages (especially those working in guesthouses and tourism businesses) with at least basic English.
Our school is open Monday through Thursday and then we enjoy a long weekend.
We have one teacher and trainer, Denis (a Brazilian who spent four and a half years living in The USA), and work well as a family and team of volunteers. The Method is very easy to use and most volunteers are taking classes on their own in the first week.
We would love you to stay with us for more than three weeks (but this is of course negotiable), and no prior knowledge of Portuguese is required. You should have a native level of English, but it is not required to be a native English speaker. Here you will see the Brazil hidden from the average tourist.
You will get to experience local food, way-of-life and interact with a small and loving community. We are truly looking forward to having you here with us. If you're looking for a fun experience during your long-term vacation, shoot us an email and grab your chance to combine fun, sun, and teaching experience and come and work and stay with us!
The volunteers will help me to teach the students and sometimes to help with office tasks.
- Classes run for 50 minutes
- The earliest volunteer class is at 8 Am and the last starts at 7.30 Pm
- Everything is negotiable so if you need a specific day off or some time off on a specific day, all you need to do is ask
- There are always things like printing and administration tasks to be done if you don't feel like teaching sometimes
The students range in age from children as young as 9 to some over 30. They all have different backgrounds and the Callan Method alone means you will learn a lot about them. They love learning about your culture themselves, so they will ask a lot of questions. You can spend some of your spare time with them outside of class learning to surf and seeing local sights (such as waterfalls), among other things.
The accommodation is an apartment with one bedroom, two beds, a bathroom, a kitchen. It is right next door to the school, so you can make coffee at 7.55 and be working at 8!
Food is provided for breakfast and lunch on teaching days. The way this works is we go shopping at the start of the week and buy food at the supermarket to fill up the fridge, including treats like coffee, fruit and snacks. There is usually enough leftover food to cover dinner too. As an extra we often go out for lunch and dinner to local cafes/restaurants.
I (Daniela) often go body boarding in the mornings, so you can come with me to a nearby beach if you want to learn to surf or frolic in the waves. You can even learn to stand-up paddle!
There is another school in Boicucanga, only a 40 minute bus ride away. You can go there on your three day weekends to socialise with other Workawayers if you want. There are regular buses to/from Sao Paulo and Sao Sabastiao in the other direction.
