We are looking for volunteers who would like to learn more about living offgrid in exchange for helping us with a number of ongoing projects.
These projects include a vegetable garden, small polytunnel, a forest garden as well as livestock and poultry. Two years ago we planted 1000 native trees and these are now needing some tlc. We also have several building projects over the summer. Other ongoing tasks include working with sheep fleece, fermenting food, making homebrew and working with plants to create tinctures and other products.
Offgrid means no mains electric (we have solar panels and a back up generator at present.) Our water is also offgrid coming from a spring on the land (it does go through a rigorous filter system!) and our loo is a composting one. We do have a hot shower and a washing machine so aren't entirely roughing it!
Accomodation is comfortable static caravan, situated away from the main cabin within the boundary of the vegetable garden to give some privacy. There is a grill and hob and a caravan sized bath for washing.
The location is rural. Nearest town is 20 mins by car. There are no buses. There is a train station in the town. Although remote, our local community is a friendly one and we are in contact with other offgridders nearby. There is always something on most weekends!
We are also happy to provide bikes as there are plenty of quiet roads to explore, as well as 300 acres of woodland behind the property with good tracks running through it and a large river less than 5 minutes walk away. There is also a pub and small shop within cycling distance! We do a run into town at least once a week which you are welcome to join us on, and I am happy to drop you to the coast for day visits.
We are trying to live gently on the earth. The garden is being established on permaculture ideals, and we practice recycling/ upcycling as much as possible. We have lots of wildlife on our doorstep as well as plenty of exciting weather so come prepared!

Help with Eco project
Ideally we are looking for volunteers who are able to work off their own initiative. Experience is not essential but enthusiasm is!!
Although we will work as a small team most of the time, it would also be helpful if volunteers are able to work alone for some periods as work and kids can take us away from project work from time to time.
The work can be HARD and physical but we will take good care of you, providing plenty of food and a warm place to stay as well as laughs long the way.
As well as cooking traditional food for volunteers, we are happy to take visitors to local beaches and castles and give them an authentic taste of Scotland. You will also get a very real idea of what it means to live off grid, as well as experiencing the highs and lows of working on a smallholding.
Static caravan with double bed.
Limited internet access
We have pets
We are smokers
Maximum 4-5 hours a day, 5 days a week
