My next destination:
Ireland - from Jul 2025 until Jul 2025 View allDescription
Hi, my name is Will. I'm a 34-year-old Brit with an Irish passport, slowly planning a future outside of my homeland.
I've spent over a decade looking after children, mostly as a 'nanny' in family homes, so I have lots of experience settling into new places and adapting to household dynamics. I'm a very conscientious person who takes care of my surroundings and I'm told that my calmness is nice to be around.
Eventually, I would love to buy a small plot of land with space to keep animals, grow all kinds of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers, and slowly - over a period of many years - create a modest home.
The end goal is to build a life that is rich in time and home-grown resources, with a healthy balance of work and leisure, community and time alone, and a day-to-day lifestyle that is separate but not completely detached from the modern world.
In the meantime, through Workaway, I want to continue helping people who are a bit closer to realising these ambitions. I’m starting to pick up some of the skills involved in eco-construction, permaculture and plant care, and I would relish the opportunity to develop these skills further.
For me, Workaway also represents the chance to meet great people, take inspiration from new places, exchange knowledge and ideas, work collectively towards a common goal and make a positive contribution to an interesting and worthwhile project.Interests

More details about your skills
I have some experience of growing vegetables, producing compost, building fences, keeping chickens, caring for animals, harvesting olives and apple grafting. I also have experience using chainsaws and axes to chop and split wood, as well as strimming, sanding, painting and various other DIY and garden maintenance jobs.
In 2025 I would especially like to help with construction/renovation work. I'd love to learn some of the skills involved in building or restoring sheds, chicken coops, outdoor toilets, decking, greenhouses and other types of outbuilding, working with wood, cob, stone or any other traditional or non-traditional building materials. However, I am always happy and willing to do the 'boring' or 'dirty' work too - cleaning, weeding, painting etc. if that's what needs doing.
I have now helped on 7 different Workaway projects and although I feel confident and strong and my knowledge is always expanding, I wouldn't want to overstate my level of proficiency; I am still relatively new to these practices, but as in all areas of my life I make sure to do things thoroughly and with careful attention. I may lack specialist skills but I think I make up for it with common sense and an eagerness to learn, work hard and apply myself to a meaningful project.
I am also a huge advocate for learning skills on YouTube! Of course, nothing beats doing things yourself, but there's still a lot of good advice available online and much to learn from other people's mistakes and successes.Age

What else ...
I am currently willingly and intentionally without fixed abode. I live my life from month to month, stitching together visits to friends and family, periods of live-in childcare work, and Workaway stays. Project Don't Pay Rent is in full swing. I've made so many meaningful and lasting connections with people in various parts of the world over the last few years and I think that's testament to both the generosity and openness of others and, if I do say so myself, my gentle and unimposing presence combined with my modus operandi to give and not take.
What makes me tick, you ask? Music, books and films are probably the cornerstones of my life. A morning spent drinking coffee and reading in the sunshine is always a great pleasure. I'm really into music, especially contemporary music - whether it's sugary pop, psychedelic rock, melancholy ballads, or in-your-face rap music - I think some of the best and most interesting music that's ever been made is being made now.
I also like to make home movies, and I often carry with me a very stripped-back camera setup so I can shoot things and make films wherever I go. I like to document my surroundings somehow. If you host me, you can expect me to take a step back from time to time and capture moments in a non-intrusive way (I hope)! Some more information

The work was really satisfying and varied, even when the bulk of the day was given over to the olive harvest. There was structure to the work days, which was helpful to plan around and to be sure of when it was time to chill out. John is an excellent… read more
