  • Description

Dominic and Rose are an open-minded and adventurous English Francophile bilingual couple. Sometimes we travel solo as individuals, sometimes as a couple and in the past we have travelled with our (now adult) children as a family. First I will give information about the qualities we share. But further down the profile I list specific skills for each of us.

We like simple living, healthy eating, gentle exercise and working outdoors. We live in rural Normandy but until October 2016 we were living in the UK. We particularly like to explore France and sometimes more widely in Europe. We do not want to be just tourists. We love workaway - we can visit new places, meet new people and experience different ways of life. As a family we believe that sustainable travelling comes with a responsibility to give back to others and to the environment and to understand that the most rewarding experiences do not come with an enormous price-tag.

We are trustworthy, reliable and multi-skilled. We are family-friendly and accustomed to interacting and co-living with others of all ages. We are competent at caring for animals and love being close to nature and in the countryside. We keep our own hens, have been beekeepers for the last 18 years and have plenty of past experience with other pets and livestock. We have life-experience and common-sense to compliment our practical skills and good capacity to learn new things. We are firm believers in the value of co-operative living.

Dom has a wide range of experience in all aspects of building and renovation. He is good at putting things right, high quality finishing and finding solutions for troublesome issues. He has a fine eye for landscaping, drainage and digger work. He processes all our firewood, has his chainsaw certificate and has worked at a sawmill. Gardening, and vegetable gardening in particular, is a passion and we are never without home grown produce. He is an extremely knowledgeable and proficient beekeeper and he loves to teach others about these amazing creatures. Dominic is calm and hardworking.

Rose is multi-skilled, a mother of four, recent grandmother and family manager. She has had many jobs and is willing to have a go at most things. She manages our hosting with workaway and warmshowers and also welcomes visiting family + friends. She is efficient at paperwork, housework and capable in the kitchen and the garden. She is a competent beekeeper in her own right and is handy with a sewing machine. Recently diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, she is learning to adapt her expectations and knows a lot about self-help and recovery. She is resilient, resourceful and kind.

In our leisure time we like to walk and explore the countryside, if we are lucky foraging for edible plants, nuts and mushrooms. We like to ride bikes for fun but Dominic is very keen and likes to go touring when he can. We like to go fishing and being on or around water in any way is a joy for us. We read and listen to audiobooks, enjoy crafting and artisitic activities and occasionally play games. Put a jigsaw on the table and Rose won’t be able to leave it alone. We are strong swimmers but prefer wild swimming to chlorinated pools. We watch some TV and films and use the internet but we do not have social media accounts or play computer games.

We are not fussy-eaters but have recently transistioned to eating a Paleo-ketogenic diet. This means that we don't consume sugar and eat very little carbohydrate. Our focus is on high-quality protein, healthy fats and oils and lashings of salad and vegetables. We find that it is relatively easy to integrate this into households that eat a healthy wide-ranging diet, we just skip the bread and dessert parts. We don't smoke, drink or take drugs.

If you are lucky enough to be involved with us when we have our kids with us ... Sylvie and William are sensible, inquisitive, loving young people who know that it is important to respect other people, animals and the environment. They also understand the importance of treating homes and possessions carefully as they have a value and that it is not always easy to replace things. They are expected to help with cooking, housework and tasks outside. Sylvie has grown to be very self sufficient and is happy in her own company. She is a talented artist and loves any sort of creative activity to which she brings her individual flair. She is a fantastic walker and loves animals and nature. William is full of ideas and enthusiasm. He talks a lot in English and French. Among his many passions, he loves to climb, cycle, repair clocks and search for interesting things at brocantes. He’s bright and often conducts experiments and tries out new inventions. He’s very independent spirited, makes brilliant scrambled eggs and can be relied upon to make cups of tea and do the washing up.
