We are three friends from Madrid, Spain, aged between 19 and 20, currently studying in Madrid — one of us is studying Medicine, and the other two are studying Business Administration. We are excited to take on new adventures and meaningful experiences abroad.

Ever since we were young, we’ve been fascinated by the American Northwest — its landscapes, culture, and way of life — and we would love the opportunity to explore it firsthand while contributing and learning along the way.

We also have strong international experience. Two of us have already spent time in the United States: one lived for a year in Illinois while studying at a high school, and another has traveled to the U.S. on vacation. In addition, all three of us have traveled to many different countries around the world, which has helped us become open-minded, adaptable, and comfortable in new environments.

We are very active and enjoy spending time outdoors. Activities like fishing, hiking, and exploring nature are some of our favorites, and we are always eager to try new things and embrace different environments.

We consider ourselves hardworking, responsible, and motivated. We are not afraid of physical work and always put in our best effort in everything we do. At the same time, we are sociable, friendly, and easy to get along with, and we enjoy meeting new people and being part of a team.

All three of us speak English fluently, and our native language is Spanish. We are open-minded, adaptable, and ready to make the most out of this experience while helping wherever we are needed.

We have a wide range of basic practical skills and are generally very handy and resourceful. We are used to figuring things out and adapting quickly to different types of tasks. We can help with general maintenance, cleaning, organizing, and basic manual work. We are comfortable working outdoors and don’t mind physically demanding tasks. We also have some experience with simple repairs and using tools when needed. We are quick learners, reliable, and always willing to take on new challenges. If we don’t know how to do something, we are eager to learn and improve.

What else ...

One of the main reasons we want to do Workaway is to step out of our comfort zone and experience a completely different way of living. We are very interested in understanding local lifestyles and learning directly from the people we meet.

We really value simple moments: sharing meals, having good conversations, listening to music, or spending time around a campfire. We believe these are the experiences that make traveling meaningful.

We are also very comfortable living together and adapting to different environments, and we always try to bring a positive attitude and good energy wherever we go.

Overall, we are motivated to make the most of the experience, not only by helping, but also by learning and fully engaging in daily life.

Santiago who initiated the contact in the beginning was a NO SHOW due to a family emergency, which was unfortunate as Santiago was the inspiration for this travel, and possibly the motivation behind the 'work away.' experience.

We do not recommend this host to future Workawayers. Here’s why, as our experience with each host was completely different.

Loren was a great host: fair with the workload, respectful of the agreed working hours, and generous in teaching us carpentry skills. With him, the exchange worked exactly as Workaway is supposed to. We have nothing negative … read more to say about him.

The problem was Denise, and it was serious enough that we cannot recommend staying here.

Regarding the work: the actual conditions did not match what was advertised on the Workaway profile. The listing simply stated that volunteers would help the hosts with tasks suited to each person’s abilities. At no point was it agreed that we would spend five consecutive hours doing physically demanding farm work. We woke up at 7 a.m. and worked five hours straight every weekday without a single break, while she stayed inside the house. Even so, she kept telling us to “keep smiling and have a good attitude.” After we left, she even messaged us claiming that we hadn’t worked, which is completely false. We completed the full five hours every single day, without exception.

Regarding the food: meals were supposed to be included in the exchange, but lunch consisted of a single tuna sandwich made with sliced bread, with no option to have seconds or eat anything else. On top of that, she criticized us by saying that we “ate like mice,” even though she was the one limiting what we were allowed to eat. Many days the work was so physically demanding that we arrived at the table with no appetite. In the end, it felt like we were being used as free labor in exchange for part of a tuna sandwich.

Regarding the personal treatment, which was by far the worst part: from the very first day, we did not feel welcome. She often looked annoyed whenever she saw us eating or working. #redacted# She called us privileged, spoiled, and immature children simply because we had traveled from Spain, and conversations constantly turned into ideological lectures, with no respect for the fact that we held different opinions. She also dismissed our hobbies: when we mentioned that we planned to go fishing, her attitude toward us changed completely.

Our impression is that she expected us to socialize with her outside of the agreed Workaway exchange. That was never part of the arrangement, and once it became clear that we preferred to spend our free time on our own, her attitude toward us noticeably worsened.

Workaway is based on mutual help, respect, and honesty, and the conditions offered should match what is advertised. Unfortunately, none of that was true when it came to Denise. As good a host as Loren was, we would not return, and we cannot recommend this place to any future Workawayer.
