Hello, I'm Sam. As I write this I work as an Engineering Technician at a local 3D printing company, but I will be leaving my job late June '25 to take a 12-15 months off to travel and backpack.
Career/skills wise, my background is mainly in running/programming CNC machines. I'm passionate about the maker movement and advanced manufacturing.
I spend most of my time outdoors, camping/backpacking in the summer and skiing in the winter. During the shoulder seasons I usually spend my weekends working on a cabin in NW Montana that I bought a few years ago.
I am very curious and always learning about something new, be it guitar/music theory, Spanish, programming, anthropology, history...anything. I spend a lot of time exploring on Google Maps and Caltopo, planning routes and daydreaming. I love to read -- mostly history, philosophy and classic novels. I have made travel a priority and have been all over. I'm not much for small talk but enjoy having deeper conversations in small groups.Interests

More details about your skills
I have some construction experience and am very motivated to learn more. Most of what I know I picked up alongside my father while we renovated my cabin in MT. I may not able to lead a project, but I am very teachable and have a strong foundation. I am comfortable using power tools and know how to use someone else's tools respectfully.
I have been told dozens of time that I should be a teacher. I have been teaching a CAD class at the local makerspace for nearly 2 years and was the longest tenured volunteer with the local Literacy Project (including ESL) when I started traveling.
My core strength is troubleshooting — whether it’s electrical, mechanical, or software-related. Problem solving has been at the heart of my career for almost a decade.Age

What else ...
I love meeting and talking to people with diverse backgrounds. Some of my favorite memories of traveling have been discussions over breakfast at hostels where 4+ countries are represented. I've done some trips hopping around hostels when I was younger. At this point, I'm much more interested in building relationships in the places I visit rather than seeing the highlights. As a result, I plan to pursue Couchsurfing and Workaways for my future trips.
