Back home in the UK - but still workawaying!

  • Description

Hello! I'm Ruth, I'm 30, and recently back home in the UK after two and a half years in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Nepal.

I worked from 2021 to 2023 as a junior carpenter, builder and workshop assistant, and am fully proficient in pretty much all hand and power tools. I have also worked six seasons as a winery cellar hand, most recently in Marlborough (NZ) and Tasmania and Coonawarra (Australia). The aim is to be a jack of all trades, but also master of a couple of them, given time of course.

I've moved around quite a bit and tried my hand a a lot of different things; teaching English in rural Nepal for a year, studying for my biology degree, lots of horticultural work when on a working holiday visa in New Zealand for 2+ years, youth work, and the aforementioned carpentry, construction and winery work.

I enjoy playing and watching cricket and badminton and do a lot of medium/long distance hiking and camping, most recently the 1000km Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia and north island section of Te Araroa in New Zealand. I also love cooking, baking, Star Wars, cross stitching, a bit of guitar, chilling in libraries, getting to know people, sharing skills and learning new things from each other.

I would be very open to any workaways where I can build on my existing skills, in particular with different types of building and carpentry (tiny houses?), ramble about some nice countryside, live in a community and encounter new ideas that have never crossed my mind before.

I feel like I have developed a beautiful network of friends and contacts through doing workaways overseas, and now I'm back home, but still [happily] without a permanent base, I'm keen to build myself that same network in the UK. Looking forward to meeting you!

  • More details about your skills

2 years of carpentry, building and construction, including decking, roofing, flooring, framing, insulation, plasterboard and plywood panelling, interior mouldings, and building tiny houses. Very basic electrics and plumbing. I've done numerous projects while workawaying requiring initiative and flexibility to work with the tools and materials available.

I can paint decently, use a mower, brushcutter, and most gardening tools. Good cook and baker, nothing too fancy, but good at feeding people healthy and delicious meals with what's available.

Experienced medium and long distance walker, always happy to talk about hikes and gear and outdoorsy things :)

Communication, leadership, decent organisational and management skills.
    Responsible, reliable and hardworking :)
