    gaining hands-on experience with agroecology, holistic management, water cycle restoration and permaculture

  • Description

    My name is Roan, I'm 25 years old, born and raised in Vancouver BC. I’m looking for a property to live on from late-September 2026 to mid-March 2027, during which I plan to complete the online Permaculture Design Course taught by Andrew Millison via Oregon State University (workspace.oregonstate.edu/course/permaculture-design-certificate-online), which requires regular access to a property to use as a context for implementing design principles.

    Additionally, this September I'm beginning a six-month online holistic management course series offered by 3LM (https://3lm.uk/product-details/product/725b-uk-300-discount), with the intention of becoming an accredited holistic management educator in the future; and in November I’m beginning a five-month online farm planning course taught by Darren Doherty, the founder of Regrarians (https://www.regrarians.org/rex-online).

    While I am confident that I will be able to balance this course load with my work-trade obligations (assuming ~25hrs/week), I am certainly open to discussing any questions or concerns this plan may present to prospective hosts.

    I am looking for a property that implements elements of permaculture, agroecology and/or holistic management (ie management-intensive grazing; mob grazing, etc) into their design and operation, so that I can gain hands-on experience with the techniques and principles I will be learning in my courses (I know it will be the off-season, but it's still better than living in the city).

    I am very inspired by the work of:
    the Paani Foundation in India
    (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXqkSh7P7Lc);
    Tarun Barat Sangh in India
    (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N9PIBATSFw);
    Vandana Shiva in India (https://navdanya.org/);
    Mark Shepard in Wisconsin
    (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v6jKpWDqTY);
    Greg Judy in Missouri
    (https://www.youtube.com/@gregjudyregenerativerancher); and Darren Doherty all around the world
    (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JmC7fZU1cOI).

    At some point in the future I plan to complete the water cycle restoration course offered by Water Stories (http://waterstories.com/core-course).

    Here is a library of agroecology resources I have compiled over the years:

  • More details about your skills

    A bit about me: I live a simple lifestyle here in the city – no smoking, drinking, drug use or partying; early to bed, early to rise; whole foods only; walk/run/stretch every day; work out every 2-3 days. I have about eight months of cumulative experience living on various rural properties (usually homesteads) in Spain, British Columbia and Hawaii. While I have relatively little experience working with herd animals (besides a few sheep in the winter), I have experience with basic construction projects; helping to insulate a large workshop; jungle management with both hand and power tools (including a chainsaw); basic seeding, transplanting, propagation, harvesting and processing; grading a driveway and moving logs with a tractor; driving an ATV with a heavy trailer on sketchy forest paths (collecting birch water for syrup); and operating a small sawmill by myself.
