Hello, I'm Robin from Colchester in the south east of England. I've been using workaway for a few years now and have a load of experience in different settings.
My goal is that within a few years I will buy some land to improve with a property to renovate. As such my preference is to volunteer on farms and smallholdings/homesteads. I’m also happy to help out with renovations, eco-construction/alternative building methods and other DIY related tasks. I like to work outside and am happy to do heavy gruntwork, that’s not to say that I don’t like to use my mind and am interested in any concepts related to permaculture design and self sustainability. Anything you could teach about any kind of animal husbandry, food preservation and living more closely with nature would also be appreciated.
I like to keep fit, normally through calisthenics but I also sometimes lift weights and have recently taken up running. I also like to hike, spending lots of time in mountains. I read a fair amount of non-fiction books, mostly on either politics/philosophy/science or on more practical topics such as relating to permaculture.
I enjoy socializing but can also handle spending time alone. I stay positive rain or shine. I have a laid back personality, am open to others worldviews, rarely get frustrated and am a hard worker. I'm looking for diverse experiences and a challenge.
I’m an expert at nothing but have tried my hand at a lot of things and am at least quite good at a few of them.
A range of basic landscaping jobs - digging out paths, levelling areas, installing steps and dry stone walls.
Farm maintenance - Gate installation/repairs, stock fencing, dug and built 3 shallow wells, constructed a polytunnel, digging a leech field for a septic tank, digging french drains and working with PVC drainage pipes.
Forestry - Felling trees (with axe or saw), cross cutting trees (with chainsaw), clearing areas of woodland and splitting logs
Agricultural work - Preparing beds for planting, planting asparagus, onions, garlic, helping to maintain a vineyard and vegetable gardens.
Masonry- Repointing stone walls with lime mortar, cob rendering, working with concrete, tiling floors/roofs and constructing scaffolding and using acrow props.
Decoration - Lime plaster/lime wash, basic painting, treating wood
Rough carpentry including a large firewood shed and building lots of different things with pallets.
Lots of experience with dogs and some experience with many other animals (e.g. ducks, chickens, bees, pigs and sheep).
I’ve attended various emergencies on farms - fires including a large forest fire, flash floods, burst pipes, wells running dry.
Some hospitality experience.
Some English teaching experience.
