Me llamo Mutale. Soy californiana, aunque nací en Arizona, la mayoría de mi vida crecí en California. Actualmente estudio urbanismo (estudios urbanos, diseño, y planificaciones urbanas) en la Universidad de California San Diego.

Soy apasionada sobre aprendiendo idiomas y conectando con culturas diversas ya que mi origen es una mezcla del mundo.

Estoy buscando un puesto para trabajar y ayudar en un proyecto agricultural y ecologíco que se vale sostenibilidad y respecta naturaleza. Es verdad que mis estudios se enfocan en ciudades, pero entienden que vida urbana no es posible, no existe sin los recursos de la tierra. Me interesa mucha la relación entre de la campaña y la ciudad y me fascina cómo podríamos integrar ambos.

I began working in food service and hospitality when I was 14 years old. Since then I've continued working in the industry, now I am a student and I have a part time job as a barista and stocking groceries in a university campus market.

I've worked back of house, in the kitchen, washing dishes, cleaning, as well as with customers in front of house, taking orders, preparing drinks, and handling the register.

I have babysitting experience as I cared for two girls, 6 and 8 for two years during high school. Additionally, I worked summer camps with children, mainly art projects but also recreational sports. I tutored my nine year-old Taiwanese cousins in English. I also taught my Zambian cousins Math and games like chess last year while I was in Zambia (when they were between 6-12 yrs. old).

Having done a year of work away, I've learned more about gardening/tree planting, farm-life, house maintenance, low-level wood working. In San Diego, I have my plants that are currently being watched over by my grandmother. I particularly like desert plants, different cactuses, succulents, and I hope to have an herb garden once I am settled in a place of my own.

Another hobby of mine is film and I practice the art by creating videos of my own and I am certified in AdobePhotoshop, however I do most of my editing through iMovie as it is more convenient for my lifestyle.

Anyway, I am an avid learner, patient, understanding, and adaptable.

Ho una personalità indipendente, ma certamente mi piace stare insieme con altra gente, oppure animali e pianti. Crescendo in California, passavo tanti giorni in spiaggia, nuotando nel oceano e prendere i bagni del sole...quindi, veramente amo l'acqua.

I have an independent personality, but of course I enjoy time with others whether they be human, plants, or animals. Growing up in California, I spent many days at the beach swimming in the ocean and so I really do love the water.

I only stayed for one week on Cinzia and Giani's property. Overall, it was a fine experience. The sea is easily accessible on foot, you can use the pool whenever you want, and for me the working hours were never more than agreed upon, sometimes the work was finished early. I mainly did outdoor cleaning tasks like sweeping up dead leaves, trimming… read more flower bushes, helping Christian water the plants, washing dishes, etc.

I could have communicated better with the hosts concerning some of the issues I experienced and ultimately resulted in my early departure. I felt there wasn't a genuine cultural exchange. In my relationships with previous Workaway hosts I felt more like we were friends, and with some of them we became more like family...unfortunately this was not the case during my time here. We did share dinner with the hosts on some nights, and they did provide food. Sometimes we did have to ask for food, and that's okay, but sometimes I did just find it a bit awkward to have to ask, however whenever I asked they did provide. Although on some occasions I did find myself going to the market, mainly for fruit since I like eating fruit.

It seemed the family was also quite busy with work and event planning as August is high tourist season in Europe, and because of this we didn't spend much time together since they had other priorities concerning their business that they needed to focus on. It also felt like there was a divide between the family and us Workawayers, for example the family would eat lunch together and we would eat our lunch separately. This is okay, however I was used to having shared meals with the hosts from my previous workaways, so this was a change.

Cinzia picked me up from the train station when I arrived. Giani took me to the train station when I planned to go to Taormina during my day off, and Lorenzo picked me up and then dropped me off when I left their villa. Also towards the end of my time here I did have a cold, and Cinzia offered me to stay longer in order to recover, however I still chose to leave.

I am very thankful for the two couples who I met, beautiful people who enhanced my experience and always checked in on me. I cannot imagine what it would have been like without them. Acitrezza is a beautiful place, and it was not easy to leave; however, I was not at my best here and it was better for me to go.

Thank you Giani, Cinzia, Lorenzo, and Federica for providing me this experience and helping me to improve my Italian. I also had the pleasure of meeting Francesca, one of their staff members and practicing some French with Christian.
