Description
My name is Kai Holley; I am half Japanese and half English, and I live in London. My favourite thing to do is travel and meet new people, where I can learn about their culture while also being able to share my culture with them. Right now, my favourite travel destination is Greece! I have been there once, and while I was there, my most enjoyed activities were windsurfing and cycling.
My hobbies that bring me joy and happiness are skateboarding, hiking, badminton, and going to the gym.
My name is Matthew Saayman, and I am a South African, living in London. I have always loved travelling from a young age, and I love exploring and discovering new cultures which I can embrace. I am very social; I love to talk to people and love to make new friends. In my spare time, I love to play basketball, skateboard, bake and hike (which I do with Kai). I also have a driver's licence, and I am fascinated with cars! (Toyota is my favourite car brand). Right now, my favourite travel destination has been Barcelona. I have been twice, and both times have been spectacular. From lying on the warm beach to the nights out at restaurants, I always look back and remember those holidays!
We are both excited to start travelling later this year (2025) and can't wait to have new experiences.
Workaway Experience:
September - October 2025: We both volunteered at a school in a rural town in Japan (Ichinomiya), where we taught English and also learned lots about Japanese culture. We volunteered for roughly around a month and also engaged with other volunteers at a hostel nearby where we would often visit and go surf.
October - November 2025: After our successful volunteering experience in Ichinomiya, we travelled to a small island called Tsushima, in between the Korean peninsula and mainland Japan. We stayed on a very old farm with 3 locals living there called Mabu, Shaw and Takumi. They were the best and so welcoming to us! Our tasks included daily cleaning, fixing up stuff around the farm and daily craftsmanship, where we built tables, chairs and stalls, painted walls and fixed roofs.
January-February 2026: I (Matthew) spent 2 weeks in Jericó, Colombia, a beautiful town in the heart of the Antioquia region. I volunteered at a hostel where I met so many amazing people that I even still keep in contact with. Tasks included cleaning up common areas, welcoming and preparing rooms for guests and making sure everyone is having a good time.
February-March 2026: I (Matthew) spent another 2 weeks in Canoa, Ecuador, which is a small local town on the coast where I volunteered at another hostel. It was more quiet here, so I spent a lot more time surfing and enjoying the beautiful views. It was very quiet, so I had a therapeutic time; however, I met lots of amazing locals who were extremely welcoming of me.
