Hi!

I'm Kizzy.

I have a passion for art, culture and history. I enjoy photography, painting, visiting art galleries and historical sites, and reading (I just graduated with a degree in English Literature). My favourite days are spent outside in the sunshine and, coming from a very active family, I enjoy long walks, swimming and cycling.

Although I have been lucky enough to visit some beautiful places across the world, my experiences and memories have been shaped by the people I have met along the way. I love learning about new cultures and traditions whilst sharing my own, and always wish to completely immerse myself and go beyond my comfort zone. I particularly enjoy cooking and experimenting with different flavours and cuisines so I would love if you would share your recipes with me!

I am hardworking and determined, and always put the maximum effort into everything that I do. I believe in living in the present and taking the opportunities that are presented to you: I want to live life to the full! You will always find me with a smile on my face and I hope to make you laugh!

Wow! What an amazing, unforgettable experience! This was my first Workaway and my first time solo-travelling so I was a little nervous but Paco is extremely kind, friendly, and generous- he quickly made me feel at home. The apartment is spacious and bright with all the amenities, and is just a three-minute walk away from the breath-taking palace and expansive gardens of La Granja (on the first day, Paco took me to watch the various fountain displays which, in my opinion, easily beat those of Versailles). Usually, the day would start with a light breakfast at 11am (I miss the freshly squeezed orange juice!) and then, afterwards, you could choose what you'd like to do and where you'd like to visit: every day was different and you are spoilt for choice. Activities included: visiting the medieval village of Pedraza, touring the aqueduct and alcázar of Segovia, and going to the glass factory where you could see glass-making demonstrations. One day, I was even lucky enough to help out with an English class at the local cultural centre.

Often, Paco will take you to the most amazing restaurants, however he is also a very good cook, and so lunch can be enjoyed on his garden patio with a view of the mountains and birds of prey circling above. He was very respectful and accommodated for my vegetarian diet: we enjoyed the most delicious fresh fruits and vegetables from the frutería, and on two occasions ordered takeaway pizza. Not to mention, Paco showed me how to make a typical Spanish tortilla de patatas which was so delicious!

After around 4pm, you can choose what you'd like to do that evening- Paco is very flexible and is used to 'playing it by ear'. Paco is very active and adores the countryside so often we would go on hikes to waterfalls, through the pine forests, alongside trenches from the civil war, and to the most tranquil bathing pools of crystal clear water. Alternatively, we played 'Dobble' or I could choose to relax and take a siesta back at the apartment. I am very grateful to Paco, because he was very patient and understanding about my wanting to improve my Spanish: most evenings he would converse with me in Spanish and by the end of the two weeks, my listening and understanding had improved remarkably (next time I visit I'll work on the speaking!). At the weekends, you were free to do as you wish, and I chose to use this time to explore Madrid (a city Paco knows well and so he can give you many suggestions). Strolling through Retiro Park or admiring the paintings of Goya at the Museo del Prado are just two of my highlights of Madrid.

Paco is very enthusiastic about providing a complete immersion into Spanish life and culture. I was introduced to all of his beautiful friends and family, who are so kind and friendly, and it was lovely to constantly bump into acquaintances of Paco whilst walking around the village. I was able to try so many new foods and sample the most delectable churros con chocolate, that I will forever be dreaming about, at the iconic Chocolatería San Ginés in Madrid. Meanwhile, Paco is incredibly knowledgeable and I learnt so much- not just about art, history, and culture, but also about how to live a fulfilling and happy life. We discussed a range of topics- ranging from politics to climate change to technology- and had a shared love of literature (in particular the works of Dickens and Shakespeare).

Although he is too modest and therefore quick to say otherwise, Paco's English is really really good! He is just aiming to perfect his pronunciation and listening skills, and his determination is inspiring. You can tell that he's very passionate about learning and I enjoyed sharing my own culture with Paco, including the hotly debated issue as to in what order the jam and cream goes on a scone (always cream first). There really is no 'work' involved: you're in the beautiful countryside, enjoying the most delicious food, constantly learning, and most importantly, in the best company! Paco goes above and beyond in every aspect and I am so grateful to him for my time in beautiful La Granja. Do not hesitate to inquire!
