  • Description

    WHO AM I?

Hello! Thank you for taking a minute to read :)

My name is Katy; I'm originally from the UK though have had the privilege of living in the Yukon, Canada's northwesternmost territory, for the last two and a half years. I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible - hiking, trail running, canoeing...I'm passionate about enabling others to connect with nature and the outdoors, as I have come to realise this is a huge privilege and not everybody has this opportunity.

I'm excited about ecology, conservation and intercultural learning. I studied Conservation Biology & Ecology at university, and have experience in communications (PR for charities and small businesses, comms strategies), writing, operations / logistics, outdoor leadership, teaching and various tourism roles. I'm keen to share my experiences and contribute my own skills to others, and would particularly love to learn more about environmental educational and sustainable tourism projects, though am open to learning anything!

I am very open and inquisitive about our world; I love learning about cultures, languages and history - and how it all interlinks with our environments. I'm also a bit of a bookworm, play the piano and enjoy cooking in my spare time...I love meeting new people and am always keen to try something new!

I have experience in storytelling and professional communications for charities and small businesses. If you have some ideas about how you want to expand your project / organisation's public communications and digital storytelling, I'd be more than happy to chat further about this.

    A FEW PAST ADVENTURES...

In May 2021 I walked 300 miles along the East Coast of England to engage coastal communities in ocean conservation. I feel that too often scientists leave local citizens out of the picture when doing their research and in order to inspire the next generation of conservationists this needs to change. En route I gave talks at local primary schools and scout huts (see photos) to inspire young people, which I really enjoyed and something I would like to continue.

This led me the following summer to the Balkans. In Montenegro, I documented a local campaign to save the Komarnica River from hydropower. I then, with two friends, walked across Albania, following the River Vjosa on foot from source to sea. We talked to as many locals, scientists and activists as possible, documenting what it's like designating a new national park in one of Europe's most rapidly developing countries. It was an incredible summer, and I'm deeply grateful to all the amazing people we met and helped us along the way.

I spent the summer of 2023 WWOOFING on an organic farm in the Gaspesie in Quebec, then spent the rest of the summer in Ontario leading canoe trips for at-risk youth. Eventually I wound my way out to the Yukon!

  • More details about your skills

Past work away experiences have been working as a hostel receptionist in Brasov Romania; I really enjoyed this job in the beautiful Transylvanian town of Brasov as I met so many interesting people travelling and the business of being a receptionist never left me in a dull moment! I got to use my language skills and even picked up some Romanian. :)

I also spent 3 weeks in Zambia staying with a wonderful family who ran a tourist lodge. I did a mixture of home schooling, DIY, gardening/landscaping and receptionist duties; it was an incredible experience and I am so grateful for these 3 weeks.

More recently, I spent 10 days on Prangli, a remote island off the northern coast of Estonia, helping on a tourist farmstead. I thoroughly enjoyed this, especially the challenge of being totally thrown in at the deep end with the Estonian language!

I love working with children and have experience babysitting and looking after children whose native language is not English, teaching them English through play. I have a good level of Italian and French and a basic level of Spanish. I spent a month as an au pair for a lovely family in Bari, southern Italy.

I volunteered at a care home in my village for elderly people with dementia as I enjoy caring for others, something that has given me important skills and experience in communicating with others and making their lives happier. I also volunteer once every two weeks at a local primary school teaching children French, so I have experience in teaching languages.

I have been the editor for my village newsletter, so I have some skills in journalism/writing.
I am able to cook and bake and I play the piano, double bass and bass guitar (the latter badly!)

After finishing school, I took up several part time jobs at home (including nannying, teaching piano & Italian and working in a cafe) and my parents run a holiday home business, so I have lots of experience in childcare/teaching and catering/hospitality environments.

Currently I work part time alongside university at an outdoors clothing shop. As well as learning more about specialist outdoors gear, I get to interact and have interesting conversations with customers about their adventures.

I also have a diploma in classical piano and enjoy composing, arranging songs and playing classical music in my free time. I have lots of experience playing in bands at school so would be very happy to run music classes.
