Description
Hello! I'm a 28-year-old software engineer currently living in Seattle, USA. I was born and raised in New York City, where I lived until graduating from New York University with a degree in Physics. After college, I spent a few years in Richmond, Virginia before ultimately making my way to Seattle.
I'd definitely describe myself as a nerd — I love to learn. Most of my days are spent exploring software, tinkering with technology, and reading; I've been an avid reader for most of my life, particularly of Fantasy and Sci-Fi. But teaching has always been the other side of that coin. I've worked with young people for most of my life: tutoring kids for nearly a decade, and spending a couple of years as a court-appointed special advocate for children in foster care. I also stay active playing pickleball and basketball, and spend a good chunk of my time raising Ruby, my nine-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy. To me, people are what make life worth living. If you asked me what I hope to get out of Workaway, my answer would be the same as why I love to read: to step into the shoes of people whose lives are radically different from my own.
I'm at a point in my life where it's very easy to run on autopilot — to work, eat, sleep, and repeat, day after day; to chase the next promotion, the next purchase, the next milestone. I can feel my perspective on what it means to live a full life slowly narrowing. Workaway, for me, is a chance to push back against that: to immerse myself in other people's lives, understand their values and stories, and carry that perspective with me as I figure out what I want the rest of my life to look like. -

More details about your skills
I learn quickly — show me something a couple of times and I'll have it down. I can clean and tidy diligently, and handle most manual labor tasks: painting, organizing, mowing, and the like if you show me how you want it done. As a city liver, I don't have hard outdoor skills or experience, but I'm willing to learn. Cooking is not my strong suit, though; I can hold my own with breakfasts and simple meals, but I won't be impressing anyone at the stove.
I also have solid experience with dogs. I wouldn't call myself a professional trainer, but I've raised my puppy Ruby to only be belligerent about 20% of the time — which I consider quite the achievement, especially for an 85-pound nine-month-old.
I'm also great with kids. I've spent nearly a decade tutoring and working with young people in various capacities, so whether it's helping with homework, kicking a ball around, or just keeping them entertained, I'm comfortable and genuinely enjoy it.
And while I'm not sure how often it comes up on a workaway — I'd be remiss not to mention my background in technology and software. I can build websites, teach computer skills, automate tasks, and find my way around most tech problems.
English is my main language, but I am conversational in Urdu as well. -
