Farina & Sofea both worked as hard or harder than any other Workawayers we've hosted. They moved a mountain of grass mulch onto our field beds. They removed all the tools from the entranceway of our house and put them into a shed. They put walls and doors onto the shed to protect/secure the tools. The moment I saw how Miki handles her 2 children & work simultaneously, i knew that i will learn a lot. As a single mom juggling work, aged parents & a daughter, there's always room for improvement. Besides the obvious but varied work in the mornings / afternoon, depending on season & weather, there's many other things to do, learn & experience, … read more just from observation alone as to how Hiro & Miki run their daily lives. Your own initiatives & common sense will take you far.

Both Hiro & Miki are very reasonable, as long as you are likewise & thoughtful in return. We were there for approx 3 weeks in freezing Dec, clearing land, cutting / transporting bamboos, salvaging wild tea plants, & doing other physically demanding work, which i find enriching in so many ways. I love it when Miki calls out "lunch time!". On rare sunny days, we end the day's work with lunch in the fields that we worked in, and the peace is so contagious.

After work, we took long walks around the scenic village, often joined or warmly greeted by curious but delightful elderly neighbours. The landscape changes between sunny & snowing days, each beautiful in its own way. Sometimes we use the bicycles to cycle to shops / train stations. But mostly we prefer to walk.

We explored nearby places on off days, and Yudaonsen town was a favourite of ours with its many onsens. Miki also took us to a hilltop onsen with breathtaking ocean views, a modern hip-hop class, a mochi-throwing house-blessing ceremony, a quaint glass workshop, a traditional pottery-making facility & a meditation temple ceremony. We thoroughly enjoyed all these cultural experiences!!

Our experiences were shared with other workawayers who came and went during our stay. Many many thanks for these helpful & insightful people as well, most of whom were very very patient & warm with my daughter.

As for Hiro himself, when it comes to philosophy, he can be righteous & impatient through both speech & body language, though i doubt he realizes it. How do you explain to a "man of reason" that faith is blind, that logic & rationalization is not the key to answer his questions? I like him more as a person when he is not philosophical.

For me, it was Miki that made our trip truly remarkable. Unlike Hiro, she doesn't strive to be heard, but I learned so much just by observing her daily rituals & how she carries herself in her varied roles, from being a daughter, a wife, a mother, and a daughter-in-law. This is a Japanese tradition that we cherish & learned so much from.

We wish Hiro, Miki, Aka & Saka a blessed and wonderful journey & years ahead, when this place will truly bloom and bear fruits from all their hard labour...
